Read the detailed description
Colonoscopy can cause anxiety and discomfort. This study examined whether Reiki administered before colonoscopy affected patients' anxiety and comfort.
The study was conducted between June and December 2024 at a city training and research hospital in Türkiye. Seventy-six patients undergoing colonoscopy were randomly assigned to one of three groups: Reiki (26 patients), sham Reiki (25 patients), or routine care (25 patients).
Patients in the Reiki group received one Level 1 Reiki session approximately 30 minutes before colonoscopy. Reiki was administered through touch at nine specific points. Patients in the sham Reiki group received a procedure designed to resemble Reiki. Patients in the control group received routine care without an additional procedure. Researchers assessed anxiety and comfort using questionnaires.

What participants receive
What participants receive. In a randomised study each person is assigned to one group by chance.
ReikiOther
Participants received one 25-30-minute Level 1 Reiki session at nine specified areas of the body. The session was administered before colonoscopy by a researcher initiated into Reiki, in accordance with the study protocol.
Sham reikiOther
In addition to routine care, participants received one 25-30-minute sham Reiki session at nine specified areas of the body before colonoscopy. The session followed the study protocol and was administered by Interviewer 2, who had not been initiated into Reiki.
| Study group | Role | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Reiki group | Experimental | Participants received a single Level 1 Reiki session approximately 30 minutes before colonoscopy, administered by a researcher trained and experienced in the Usui method. Receives: Other: Reiki |
| Sham reiki | Placebo comparator | Participants received a single sham Reiki session approximately 30 minutes before colonoscopy, administered by a person who had not received Reiki training or initiation. The procedure was presented to participants as Reiki. Receives: Other: Sham reiki |
| Control | No intervention | Routine care |
What is being measured
The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.
Anxiety
State anxiety (anxiety at the time of assessment) and trait anxiety (a general tendency to feel anxious) were measured using the short forms of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S and STAI-T). Higher scores indicate greater anxiety.
Measured: 40 minutes before colonoscopy (before Reiki or sham Reiki) and 20 minutes after completion of colonoscopy.
Comfort
Patient comfort, patients rated their comfort on a 0-10 scale, where 0 means no comfort and 10 means the highest possible comfort. Interviewer 1 recorded their responses.
Measured: 40 minutes before colonoscopy (before Reiki or sham Reiki) and 20 minutes after completion of colonoscopy.
