About this study
Official title: The Effect of Mind Mapping-Based Education on Postoperative Pain, Kinesiophobia, and Discharge Readiness in Patients Undergoing Total Knee A
Total knee arthroplasty is a surgical procedure used to relieve pain and improve function in patients with severe knee joint problems. However, patients may experience pain, fear of movement (kinesiophobia), and difficulties in feeling ready to leave the hospital after surgery.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of mind mapping-based education on postoperative pain, kinesiophobia, and discharge readiness in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty.
In this study, patients will receive education based on mind mapping in addition to routine care, or routine care alone, according to their assigned study group. Mind mapping is a visual learning method that presents information using connected words, concepts, and diagrams. The study will compare the outcomes of the groups to determine whether mind mapping-based education improves patients' postoperative experiences and readiness for discharge.
Postoperative pain, fear of movement, and discharge readiness will be assessed using appropriate measurement tools. The findings may help improve patient education and support recovery after total knee arthroplasty.
Read the detailed description
Mind mapping is a visual learning strategy that organizes information around a central concept through related concepts, keywords, and connections. This approach may facilitate the organization, comprehension, and recall of information by presenting complex topics in a structured visual format.
In perioperative nursing care, patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty need information about the surgical process, postoperative recovery, pain management, mobilization, and preparation for discharge. Providing structured education before and after surgery may support patients' understanding of the recovery process and encourage their active participation in postoperative care.
This randomized controlled study will investigate the effects of mind mapping-based education provided before and after total knee arthroplasty, in addition to routine care, compared with routine care alone. The intervention is designed to present perioperative information in a visual and organized format.
Participants will be randomly allocated to an intervention group or a control group. The intervention group will receive mind mapping-based education in addition to routine care, whereas the control group will receive routine care without the additional mind mapping-based educational intervention.
The study is intended to provide evidence regarding the potential contribution of mind mapping-based education to perioperative patient education and nursing care in individuals undergoing total knee arthroplasty.

What participants receive
What participants receive. In a randomised study each person is assigned to one group by chance.
Mind Mapping-Based EducationBehavioural
Participants will receive mind mapping-based education before and after total knee arthroplasty, in addition to routine care. The education will cover the perioperative process, postoperative pain management, mobilization, recovery, and discharge preparation.
| Study group | Role | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Mind Mapping-Based Education Group | Experimental | Participants in this group will receive mind mapping-based education before and after total knee arthroplasty in addition to routine care. The education will provide structured visual information about the perioperative process, postoperative pain management, mobilization, recovery, and preparation for hospital discharge. Receives: Behavioral: Mind Mapping-Based Education |
| Routine Care Group | No intervention | Participants in this group will receive routine care, including standard patient education provided by the clinical unit, without the additional mind mapping-based educational intervention. |
What is being measured
The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.
Change from Baseline in Kinesiophobia Score
Kinesiophobia will be assessed at the initial data collection (baseline) and on postoperative day 1 using the kinesiophobia measurement instrument specified in the study protocol. The change in score from baseline to postoperative day 1 will be calculated and compared between the mind mapping-based education group and the routine care group. Scoring and interpretation will follow the instrument's guidelines.
Measured: Baseline (initial data collection before the intervention) and postoperative day 1.
Postoperative Pain Intensity on the Numeric Rating Scale
Postoperative pain intensity will be assessed using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) on postoperative days 0, 1, and 2. Pain scores at each assessment time point will be compared between the mind mapping-based education group and the routine care group. Scoring will follow the version of the NRS specified in the study protocol.
Measured: Postoperative day 0, postoperative day 1, and postoperative day 2.
Readiness for Hospital Discharge Score
Readiness for hospital discharge will be assessed using the Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale on postoperative day 2, after the decision to discharge the patient has been made. Scores will be calculated according to the instrument's scoring guidelines and compared between the mind mapping-based education group and the routine care group
Measured: Postoperative day 2, after the decision to discharge the patient has been made.

Primary outcome
Change from Baseline in Kinesiophobia Score
Time frame: Baseline (initial data collection before the intervention) and postoperative day 1.
Postoperative Pain Intensity on the Numeric Rating Scale
Time frame: Postoperative day 0, postoperative day 1, and postoperative day 2.
Postoperative pain intensity will be assessed using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) on postoperative days 0, 1, and 2. Scoring will follow the version of the NRS specified in the study protocol.
Readiness for Hospital Discharge Score
Time frame: Postoperative day 2, after the decision to discharge the patient has been made.
