About this study
Official title: The Relationship Between the Degree of Neuromuscular Blockade and the Conditions of Laryngeal Mask Ventilation: A Prospective Randomized Double-Blind Study
This prospective, randomized, double-blind study aims to evaluate the effect of different degrees of neuromuscular blockade on the performance of a video laryngeal mask airway (LMA) during general anesthesia. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive rocuronium at 0, 0.3, or 0.6 mg/kg, corresponding to 0, 1, or 2 times the ED95, respectively. The primary outcome is oropharyngeal leak pressure measured after LMA insertion. Secondary outcomes include LMA insertion conditions, insertion time and number of attempts, laryngeal view, respiratory parameters, and postoperative airway-related complications.
- Being tested
- Normal Saline (Rocuronium 0 mg/kg), Rocuronium 0.3 mg/kg, Rocuronium 0.6 mg/kg
What participants receive
What participants receive. In a randomised study each person is assigned to one group by chance.
Normal Saline (Rocuronium 0 mg/kg)Other
Normal saline is administered intravenously as the control study drug before video LMA insertion.
Rocuronium 0.3 mg/kgDrug
Rocuronium 0.3 mg/kg (1 × ED95) is administered intravenously before video LMA insertion.
Rocuronium 0.6 mg/kgDrug
Rocuronium 0.6 mg/kg (2 × ED95) is administered intravenously before video LMA insertion.
| Study group | Role | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| 0 × ED95 Group | Active comparator | Participants receive rocuronium 0 mg/kg (0 × ED95) before video LMA insertion. Receives: Other: Normal Saline (Rocuronium 0 mg/kg) |
| 1 × ED95 Group | Active comparator | Participants receive rocuronium 0.3 mg/kg (1 × ED95) before video LMA insertion. Receives: Drug: Rocuronium 0.3 mg/kg |
| 2 × ED95 Group | Active comparator | Participants receive rocuronium 0.6 mg/kg (2 × ED95) before video LMA insertion. Receives: Drug: Rocuronium 0.6 mg/kg |
What is being measured
The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.
Oropharyngeal Leak Pressure (OLP)
Oropharyngeal leak pressure will be measured 5 minutes after successful video LMA insertion and compared among the three neuromuscular blockade groups. OLP is expressed in cmH2O.
Measured: 5 minutes after successful video LMA insertion
Secondary outcomes (6)
Oropharyngeal Leak Pressure at Later Time Points
Measured: 15 and 30 minutes after successful video LMA insertion
Number of LMA Insertion Attempts
The number of attempts required for successful video LMA insertion will be recorded. A maximum of two insertion attempts is permitted. Failure will be recorded if successful insertion is not achieved after two attempts.
Measured: During anesthetic induction before surgery, assessed for up to 5 minutes
LMA Insertion Time
LMA insertion time will be measured in seconds from mouth opening to confirmation of the first capnographic waveform.
Measured: During anesthetic induction before surgery, assessed for up to 5 minutes
Laryngeal View Grade
The laryngeal view obtained through the video LMA will be graded on a 4-point scale. The need for real-time adjustment and any change in laryngeal view after adjustment will also be recorded.
Measured: Immediately after successful video LMA insertion
Neuromuscular Blockade at LMA Insertion
Neuromuscular response will be recorded immediately before video LMA insertion using train-of-four monitoring, including TOF count and/or quantitative twitch response according to the available monitor.
Measured: Immediately before video LMA insertion
Number of Participants With Sore Throat, Hoarseness, and Dysphagia
The presence or absence of sore throat, hoarseness, and dysphagia will be assessed separately for each participant.
Measured: Postoperatively in the PACU and at 24 hours after surgery

Questions about this trial
What is this clinical trial studying?
A Phase 4 study testing Normal Saline (Rocuronium 0 mg/kg), Rocuronium 0.3 mg/kg and Rocuronium 0.6 mg/kg in people with Airway Management and Neuromuscular Blockade, run by Korea University Guro Hospital.
The full registered description is in the About this study section and the official record.
Who may be eligible to take part?
The sponsor lists 5 inclusion and 7 exclusion criteria. Eligibility is decided by the study team after screening, so read the full criteria and contact a listed site.
Is this clinical trial currently recruiting?
The record says: opening soon, as of the sponsor's last update on 18 Sep 2026. Status can change between updates, so confirm with the study contact before making plans.
What are the possible benefits and risks?
They depend on the study and the treatment, and no study can promise a benefit. The study team explains the known risks during informed consent, before anyone joins; the record itself does not list them.
What does this phase mean?
Phase 4 studies take place after a treatment is approved, to learn more about its long-term benefits and risks in everyday use.
Not every study follows the same path, and some studies (observational studies, device studies) have no phase.
Are results available for this study?
This study is still under way. Results are not available in the source record yet.
How can a doctor refer a patient or contact the research team?
Contact Seok Kyeong Oh, MD, PhD (82-2-2626-3234, nanprayboy@korea.ac.kr), or a site near the patient. AzTrials does not enrol participants or take referrals.
What does the primary outcome measure?
Oropharyngeal Leak Pressure (OLP) (time frame: 5 minutes after successful video LMA insertion). It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.
Where can I read the original study information?
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?
No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.
How often is this information updated?
AzTrials copies changed records from ClinicalTrials.gov every night and reloads the whole registry every week. The sponsor last updated this record on 18 Sep 2026.
