About this study
Official title: Comparison of Two Different Teaching Methods for Temporomandibular Joint Anatomy, Temporomandibular Disorders and Occlusal Splint Applications Among Dental Students
This randomized two-sequence crossover educational study aimed to compare theoretical and practical teaching methods for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) anatomy, temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), and prosthodontic treatment approaches among dental students. A total of 83 third-year dental students were randomly allocated to two groups. Group 1 received theoretical teaching followed by practical teaching, whereas Group 2 received practical teaching followed by theoretical teaching. Both groups received both teaching methods, which covered TMJ anatomy, disc position and function, disc displacement, clinical manifestations, joint mechanics, and prosthodontic treatment approaches. Following completion of both teaching sessions, students completed a 17-item questionnaire evaluating their perceptions of the teaching methods and their preferences regarding the most effective and ideal teaching approach.

What participants receive
What participants receive. In a randomised study each person is assigned to one group by chance.
Theoretical TeachingOther
A slide-assisted theoretical teaching session covering temporomandibular joint anatomy, disc position and function, disc displacement with and without reduction, clinical manifestations, joint mechanics, and prosthodontic treatment approaches.
Practical TeachingOther
A model-assisted hands-on teaching session covering temporomandibular joint anatomy and function, temporomandibular disorders, and prosthodontic treatment approaches, including hands-on fabrication of anterior repositioning and stabilization splints.
| Study group | Role | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Theoretical-Practical Sequence | Experimental | Participants assigned to this sequence first received the slide-assisted theoretical teaching session, followed by the model-assisted practical teaching session. Both sessions covered temporomandibular joint anatomy, temporomandibular disorders, and prosthodontic treatment approaches. Receives: Other: Theoretical Teaching; Other: Practical Teaching |
| Practical-Theoretical Sequence | Experimental | Participants assigned to this sequence first received the model-assisted practical teaching session, followed by the slide-assisted theoretical teaching session. What is being measured
The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.
Students' Perceived Effectiveness of the Teaching Methods
Students rated the effectiveness of the theoretical and practical teaching methods using a 5-point Likert scale ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). Ratings for the two teaching methods were compared to evaluate students' perceptions of their effectiveness.
Measured: Immediately after completion of both teaching sessions

Questions about this trial
What is this clinical trial studying?
A study testing Theoretical Teaching and Practical Teaching in people with Dental Education, run by Sakarya University at 1 site in Turkey (Türkiye).
The full registered description is in the About this study section and the official record.
Who may be eligible to take part?
The sponsor lists 1 inclusion and 1 exclusion criteria. Eligibility is decided by the study team after screening, so read the full criteria and contact a listed site.
Is this clinical trial currently recruiting?
The record says: finished, as of the sponsor's last update on 16 Sep 2026. Status can change between updates, so confirm with the study contact before making plans.
Where is the study taking place?
The record lists 1 site in Turkey (Türkiye). Whether a site is taking part right now should be confirmed with that site. See every site.
What are the possible benefits and risks?
They depend on the study and the treatment, and no study can promise a benefit. The study team explains the known risks during informed consent, before anyone joins; the record itself does not list them.
Are results available for this study?
The study is completed, but results are not available in the source record. That does not mean the treatment did or did not work.
How can a doctor refer a patient or contact the research team?
The record lists no contact. The official record names the sponsor, who can be asked directly. AzTrials does not enrol participants or take referrals.
What does the primary outcome measure?
Students' Perceived Effectiveness of the Teaching Methods (time frame: Immediately after completion of both teaching sessions). It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.
Where can I read the original study information?
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?
No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.
How often is this information updated?
AzTrials copies changed records from ClinicalTrials.gov every night and reloads the whole registry every week. The sponsor last updated this record on 16 Sep 2026.
