About this study

Official title: Evaluation of the Effects of Ozonated Oil Administration on Athletic Performance and Injury Prevention in Elite Athletes.

Ozonized oil has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, but its effects on athletic performance remain unclear. This study evaluated whether daily ozonized oil supplementation, combined with training, influences aerobic capacity, anaerobic power, maximal strength, and muscular endurance in elite rugby players over six months

Being tested
Ozonized Oil

What participants receive

What participants receive. In a randomised study each person is assigned to one group by chance.

  • Ozonized OilDietary supplement

, the present study aimed to investigate the potential effects of daily oral supplementation with ozonized oil (O3ZONE Sport®) (produced for O3 ZONE LIMITED, Acquaviva, RSM) on physical performance outcomes - aerobic capacity, maximal strength, muscular endurance, and functional fitness - in elite rugby players over a six-month training period.

Study groups in NCT07801924
Study groupRoleWhat they receive
Intervention group (IG): received daily ozonized oil supplementationExperimentalThe IG received the supplement of ozonized oil capsules (O3ZONE Sport ®). Dosage was standardized and adjusted according to body: * ≥100 kg: 6 capsules/day (3 morning, 3 evening) * <100 kg: 4 capsules/day (2 morning, 2 evening) Adherence to the protocol was monitored weekly through self-report and supervision by team medical staff. Both groups followed identical training protocols; the IG additionally received daily ozonized oil. Performance was assessed at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months using the Bronco test (field endurance), Bruce and Léger tests (estimated VO2max), the Running-Based Anaerobic Sprint Test (RAST), and tests of quadriceps and bench-press 1-repetition maximum (1RM) and endurance at 50% 1RM. Outcomes were expressed as percentage change from baseline

What is being measured

The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.

  1. The primary objective was to investigate the effects of ozonated oil administration on athletic performance and injury prevention in a group of 21 rugby athletes, divided into two groups: Experimental group (n=13) vs Control group (n=8)

Bruce test: which measures a subject's maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max). VO2max represents the maximum aerobic power, that is, the maximum amount of energy that can be synthesized by the aerobic mechanism in a unit of time.

    Measured: 1 year

Secondary outcomes (2)
  1. The primary objective was to investigate the effects of ozonated oil administration on athletic performance and injury prevention in a group of 21 rugby athletes, divided into two groups: Experimental group (n=13) vs Control group (n=8)

Bronco test: is a 1,200 meter shuttle run designed to measure maximum aerobic speed (MAS) and endurance, primarily used in rugby. The test requires athletes to complete five sets of 20 meter, 40 meter, and 60meter shuttle runs, totalling 1,200 meters as fast as possible

    Measured: 1 year

  2. The primary objective was to investigate the effects of ozonated oil administration on athletic performance and injury prevention in a group of 21 rugby athletes, divided into two groups: Experimental group (n=13) vs Control group (n=8)

Leger Test:or multi-stage fitness test, requires running back and forth between two markers placed exactly 20 meters (65.6 feet) apart. The pace is set by audio beeps, with speeds increasing every minute (level), typically starting at 8.5 km/h and increasing by 0.5 km/h each level

    Measured: 1 year

Questions about this trial

What is this clinical trial studying?

A study testing Ozonized Oil in people with Recovery Methods and Strength Endurance, run by Universita degli Studi di Genova at 2 sites in Italy.

The full registered description is in the About this study section and the official record.

Who may be eligible to take part?

The sponsor lists 0 inclusion and 1 exclusion criteria. Eligibility is decided by the study team after screening, so read the full criteria and contact a listed site.

Is this clinical trial currently recruiting?

The record says: finished, as of the sponsor's last update on 3 Sep 2026. Status can change between updates, so confirm with the study contact before making plans.

Where is the study taking place?

The record lists 2 sites in Italy. Whether a site is taking part right now should be confirmed with that site. See every site.

What are the possible benefits and risks?

They depend on the study and the treatment, and no study can promise a benefit. The study team explains the known risks during informed consent, before anyone joins; the record itself does not list them.

Are results available for this study?

The study is completed, but results are not available in the source record. That does not mean the treatment did or did not work.

How can a doctor refer a patient or contact the research team?

The record lists no contact. The official record names the sponsor, who can be asked directly. AzTrials does not enrol participants or take referrals.

What does the primary outcome measure?

The primary objective was to investigate the effects of ozonated oil administration on athletic performance and injury prevention in a group of 21 rugby athletes, divided into two groups: Experimental group (n=13) vs Control group (n=8) (time frame: 1 year). It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.

Where can I read the original study information?
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?

No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.

How often is this information updated?

AzTrials copies changed records from ClinicalTrials.gov every night and reloads the whole registry every week. The sponsor last updated this record on 3 Sep 2026.
