About this study

Knee Osteoarthritis is one of the most common causes of chronic joint pain. Although clinical guidelines recommend weight loss and regular physical activity as first line treatments this can be difficult for patients to do. This study aims to better understand what makes it harder or easier for patients to participate in weight management or exercise programs and to design a weight and exercise program specifically tailored to older adults managing chronic health issues.

Based on input from patients and providers we will design and pilot a virtual exercise and weight management program to help patients with knee osteoarthritis in their home. Participants will be asked to fill out questionnaires about their knee pain and have phone or video check-ins with the study team to monitor progress.

What participants receive

What participants receive. In a randomised study each person is assigned to one group by chance.

This is the only intervention that will be assigned to participants. Program will be based on participant's current activity level and current weight guidelines.

What is being measured

The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.

  1. Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcomes Score (KOOS)

A valid, reliable, and responsive scale developed for use in studies of knee problems including osteoarthritis.

    Measured: 3 and 6 months

  2. Prospective preference assessment

Descriptive feasibility outcome, a 5 point likert scale used to determine patient willingness to participate in the research.

    Measured: Baseline

Secondary outcomes (4)
  1. Use, dose, and frequency of analgesics

Patient-reported counts of the use, dose, and frequency of pain medications used, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

    Measured: 3 and 6 months

  2. Self-reported current weight

Patients will be asked to self report their current weight at the defined time points

    Measured: 3 and 6 months

  3. Participant satisfaction and adherence

Patient satisfaction will be measured using a 5 point Likert scale for a series of questions aimed at perceived effectiveness of the intervention, ease of use and likeliness of continuing in the intervention

    Measured: 3 and 6 months

  4. The Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE)

A recommended and reliable assessment for physical activity in older adults that has demonstrated positive correlation with Actigraph monitor data

    Measured: 3 and 6 months

Questions about this trial

What is this clinical trial studying?

A study testing Home-based exercise and weight management program in people with Osteoarthritis of the Knee, run by Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center at 1 site in United States.

The full registered description is in the About this study section and the official record.

Who may be eligible to take part?

The sponsor lists 4 inclusion and 4 exclusion criteria. Eligibility is decided by the study team after screening, so read the full criteria and contact a listed site.

Is this clinical trial currently recruiting?

The record says: opening soon, as of the sponsor's last update on 6 Nov 2026. Status can change between updates, so confirm with the study contact before making plans.

Where is the study taking place?

The record lists 1 site in United States. Whether a site is taking part right now should be confirmed with that site. See every site.

What are the possible benefits and risks?

They depend on the study and the treatment, and no study can promise a benefit. The study team explains the known risks during informed consent, before anyone joins; the record itself does not list them.

Are results available for this study?

This study is still under way. Results are not available in the source record yet.

How can a doctor refer a patient or contact the research team?

Contact Lindsey A MacFarlane, MD, MPH ((603) 650-8622, Lindsey.A.MacFarlane@hitchcock.org), or a site near the patient. AzTrials does not enrol participants or take referrals.

What does the primary outcome measure?

Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcomes Score (KOOS) (time frame: 3 and 6 months). The study lists 2 primary outcomes in all. It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.

Where can I read the original study information?
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?

No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.

How often is this information updated?

AzTrials copies changed records from ClinicalTrials.gov every night and reloads the whole registry every week. The sponsor last updated this record on 6 Nov 2026.
