About this study
Official title: The Effect of Climate Change Education Provided to Pregnant Women on Climate Change Awareness, Climate Change Anxiety, and Psychosocial Health: A Quasi-Experimental Study
Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of climate change education provided to pregnant women on climate change awareness, climate change anxiety, and psychosocial health.
Materials and Methods: This single-group, pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study was conducted between January and March 2026 at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Outpatient Clinic of Dicle University Hospital. The study included 75 pregnant women. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form, the Climate Change Awareness Scale for Pregnant Women (CCAS-PW), the Climate Change Anxiety Scale (CCAS), and the Psychosocial Health Assessment Scale in Pregnancy (PHASP). Participants received education on climate change and its effects on pregnancy. Descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, were used to summarize the data. Pretest and posttest measurements were compared using the paired-samples t-test.
Keywords: Pregnancy, Climate change, Awareness, Anxiety, Psychosocial health.
Read the detailed description
The educational intervention consisted of a 30-minute session on climate change and its effects on pregnancy, supplemented by an informational brochure. Participants completed the study questionnaires before the educational session and again four hours after the session to assess changes in climate change awareness, climate change anxiety, and psychosocial health.

What participants receive
What participants receive. In a randomised study each person is assigned to one group by chance.
Climate Change EducationBehavioural
Participants received an approximately 30-minute individual climate change education session. The education addressed climate change and its potential effects on pregnancy and maternal and fetal health, including the effects of extreme heat and air pollution, potential fetal effects, psychosocial effects, and protective measures that can be taken during pregnancy. The education was delivered face-to-face by the researcher, and participants were provided with an educational brochure after the session. Post-intervention assessments were conducted four hours after the education.
| Study group | Role | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Climate Change Education Group | Experimental | Participants received an approximately 30-minute individual education session on climate change and its potential effects on pregnancy and maternal and fetal health. The education included information on climate change awareness, health effects of extreme heat and air pollution, potential effects on the fetus, psychosocial effects, and protective measures. Participants were also provided with an educational brochure. Post-intervention assessments were conducted four hours after the education. Receives: Behavioral: Climate Change Education |
What is being measured
The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.
Change in Climate Change Awareness
Climate change awareness was assessed using the Climate Change Awareness Scale for Pregnant Women (CCAS-PW). The scale consists of 21 items rated on a 5-point Likert scale and includes general, maternal, and fetal awareness subscales. Total scores range from 21 to 105. Higher scores indicate greater climate change awareness, representing a better outcome.
Measured: Baseline (before the educational session) and four hours after the educational session.
Change in Climate Change Anxiety
Climate change anxiety was assessed using the 10-item Climate Change Anxiety Scale (CCAS). Each item is rated from 1 to 5. Total scores range from 10 to 50. Higher scores indicate greater climate change anxiety, representing a worse outcome.
Measured: Baseline (before the educational session) and four hours after the educational session.
Secondary outcomes (1)
Change in Psychosocial Health During Pregnancy
Psychosocial health was assessed using the 46-item Psychosocial Health Assessment Scale in Pregnancy (PHASP). Each item is scored from 1 to 5, with reverse scoring applied where required. Summed scores range from 46 to 230 and are divided by 46 to obtain a mean score ranging from 1 to 5. The mean score is used as the outcome measure. Higher mean scores indicate better psychosocial health.
Measured: Baseline (before the educational session) and four hours after the educational session.
