About this study
Official title: The Effect of Filter Lifespan in Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy on the Rate of New Infections in Critically Ill Patients With AKI: a Prospective Observational Study
This observational study aims to explore the factors that influence the risk of new infections in critically ill patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) requiring continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) in the UK.
Read the detailed description
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a potentially life threatening condition which affects 1 in 2 patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Patients often need renal replacement therapy (RRT). A secondary analysis of a RCT showed an association between circuit life and risk of infections.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the specific factors that influence the risk of new infections in critically ill patients with AKI requiring continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) in the UK and whether longer filter life is indeed a contributing factor.

What participants receive
What participants receive. In a randomised study each person is assigned to one group by chance.
| Study group | Role | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| patients with AKI | treated with CRRT |
What is being measured
The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.
number of new infections
the number of new infections since start of CRRT, defined as new infections after initiation of CRRT
Measured: up to day 28
Secondary outcomes (3)
Renal and survival outcomes
- Days on renal replacement therapy (RRT) from start of CRRT until day 28
Measured: 28 days
Duration of mechanical ventilation from start of CRRT
days on mechanical ventilation
Measured: day 28
hospital length of stay
days in hospital
Measured: day 60

Questions about this trial
What is this clinical trial studying?
An observational study of Acute Kidney Injury, run by Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust at 1 site in United Kingdom.
The full registered description is in the About this study section and the official record.
Who may be eligible to take part?
The sponsor lists 2 inclusion and 7 exclusion criteria. Eligibility is decided by the study team after screening, so read the full criteria and contact a listed site.
Is this clinical trial currently recruiting?
The record says: opening soon, as of the sponsor's last update on 29 Oct 2026. Status can change between updates, so confirm with the study contact before making plans.
Where is the study taking place?
The record lists 1 site in United Kingdom. Whether a site is taking part right now should be confirmed with that site. See every site.
What are the possible benefits and risks?
They depend on the study and the treatment, and no study can promise a benefit. The study team explains the known risks during informed consent, before anyone joins; the record itself does not list them.
Are results available for this study?
This study is still under way. Results are not available in the source record yet.
How can a doctor refer a patient or contact the research team?
Contact Marlies Ostermann, PhD (+447742514213, m.ostermann@nhs.net), or a site near the patient. AzTrials does not enrol participants or take referrals.
What does the primary outcome measure?
number of new infections (time frame: up to day 28). It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.
Where can I read the original study information?
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?
No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.
How often is this information updated?
AzTrials copies changed records from ClinicalTrials.gov every night and reloads the whole registry every week. The sponsor last updated this record on 29 Oct 2026.
