About this study
Official title: Single-Session Combination of Microfocused Ultrasound With Visualization, AbobotulinumtoxinA, and Temporal Hyaluronic Acid Filler for Non-Surgical Eyebrow Lifting: A Prospective Observational Cohort Study of Routine Clinical Practice
This observational study describes the results of a routine aesthetic treatment for mild to moderate eyebrow drooping (brow ptosis). Thirty-six adults who came to Klinika Estelab (Moscow) asking for rejuvenation of the upper face received, as part of their usual care, one combined treatment session: microfocused ultrasound with visualization (Ultherapy), abobotulinumtoxinA (Dysport) injections, and hyaluronic acid filler in the temples, with a routine toxin touch-up after 2 weeks. The investigators did not assign any treatment; they only added standardized assessments. Eyebrow height was measured on standardized photographs before treatment, immediately after treatment, and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. Aesthetic improvement, patient satisfaction, procedural pain, and side effects were also recorded.
Read the detailed description
Adults aged 35-65 years with mild to moderate brow ptosis (grade 2-3 on the Merz brow positioning grading scale) who independently sought aesthetic rejuvenation of the upper face at Klinika Estelab (Moscow, Russia) received the clinic's standard combined treatment in one session: microfocused ultrasound with visualization (MFU-V; DS 10-1.5 transducer, 10 MHz, 1.5 mm focal depth), abobotulinumtoxinA injections to the forehead, glabella, and lateral canthal area, and supraperiosteal temporal hyaluronic acid filler after vascular mapping, followed by a routine abobotulinumtoxinA touch-up at 2 weeks. Treatments were part of routine clinical care and were not assigned by the investigators. Outcomes were assessed with standardized photography (FotoFinder) and photogrammetric measurement of mean and maximum eyebrow height by two blinded dermatologists, temporal ultrasound, the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (independent blinded physician and patient), the FACE-Q Satisfaction with Upper Eyelids scale (baseline and 12 months), procedural pain (0-10 numeric rating scale), and adverse events at each visit. The study was approved by the Local Ethics Committee of Klinika Estelab LLC (protocol No. 3, 14 December 2023), and all participants gave written informed consent. The study was registered retrospectively.

What participants receive
What participants receive. In a randomised study each person is assigned to one group by chance.
Microfocused ultrasound with visualizationDevice
Also called Ultherapy, Ulthera System
Single session of microfocused ultrasound with visualization (Ultherapy, Merz Aesthetics) using the DS 10-1.5 transducer (10 MHz, 1.5 mm focal depth), performed as part of routine clinical care.
AbobotulinumtoxinADrug
Also called Dysport
Intramuscular injections to the forehead, glabella, and lateral canthal area (total 100-200 Speywood units) in the same session, followed by a routine touch-up at 2 weeks, as part of routine clinical care.
Hyaluronic acid fillerDevice
Also called ART FILLER Universal
Supraperiosteal injection into the temporal region with a needle after ultrasound vascular mapping, in the same session, as part of routine clinical care.
| Study group | Role | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Combined upper-face treatment (routine care) | Adults with mild to moderate brow ptosis who independently sought aesthetic rejuvenation of the upper face and received the clinic's standard single-session combined treatment as part of routine clinical care. Treatments were not assigned by the investigators. Receives: Device: Microfocused ultrasound with visualization; Drug: AbobotulinumtoxinA; Device: Hyaluronic acid filler |
What is being measured
The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.
Change From Baseline in Mean Eyebrow Height
Mean of six standardized distances (mm) from the line through the medial canthi to the upper edge of the eyebrow, measured on standardized photographs by two blinded dermatologists; right and left values averaged.
Measured: Baseline, immediately after treatment, and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment
Change From Baseline in Maximum Eyebrow Height
Largest of six standardized distances (mm) from the line through the medial canthi to the upper edge of the eyebrow, measured on standardized photographs by two blinded dermatologists; right and left values averaged.
Measured: Baseline, immediately after treatment, and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment
Number of Participants With Adverse Events
Adverse events identified by clinical examination at each visit, including type, severity, and duration.
Measured: From treatment to 12 months
Secondary outcomes (3)
Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS) Score
Five-point scale (1 = very much improved, 2 = much improved, 3 = improved, 4 = no change, 5 = worse), rated separately by an independent blinded physician and by the participant.
Measured: Immediately after treatment and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment
FACE-Q Satisfaction With Upper Eyelids Score
Patient-reported FACE-Q Eye Module scale, Rasch-transformed score from 0 (worst) to 100 (best).
Measured: Baseline and 12 months after treatment
Procedural Pain
Pain during microfocused ultrasound rated on a 0-10 numeric rating scale (0 = no pain, 10 = worst imaginable pain).
Measured: During the procedure (day 0)
