Airway AssessmentfingerbreadthsNCT07888660
Discrepancy of Airway Assessment for Intubation Among Thai Population Using Fingerbreadths as Substitute for Centimetres
An observational study of Airway Assessment, run by Prince of Songkla University at 1 site in Thailand.
Trial summary
Hand-dimensions of 64 airway assessment personnel were measured by one investigator using a vernier caliper. These personnel assessed the thyromental distance and inter-incisor gap of 15 pseudo-patients in a fully crossed design following normal practice. They then measured these parameters using a vernier caliper. Read more about this study

About this study
Hand-dimensions of 64 airway assessment personnel were measured by one investigator using a vernier caliper. These personnel assessed the thyromental distance and inter-incisor gap of 15 pseudo-patients in a fully crossed design following normal practice. They then measured these parameters using a vernier caliper. Inter-assessor variability using the same pseudo-patient was then compared between measurements based on raw fingerbreadths, fingerbreadths adjusted for hand size, and vernier caliper.
Read the detailed description
A sample of personnel who may need to undertake airway assessment of patients scheduled for intratracheal intubation was enrolled and their hand measurements taken. Each assessor was requested to make the 4 airway assessments, TMD, ICG, Mallampati grade and upper lip bite test on each of a group of volunteers. The TMD and ICG were measured first using fingerbreadths and then making measurements using a vernier caliper. Agreement between raw and hand size adjusted fingerbreadth measurements and vernier measurements of TMD and ICG were evaluated, and inter-assessor variation using each of the measurement/grading methods assessed

What participants receive
What participants receive. In a randomised study each person is assigned to one group by chance.
the caliper venier will be used to measure the airway.Diagnostic test
the vernier calipers were applied with only light pressure so that the soft tissue of the hand was not indented. Each measurement was made three times and the mean dimension calculated.
| Study group | Role | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sixty-four persons were recruited as assessors from among the hospital personnel who would at times need to make airway assessments. They included 9 attending anaesthesiologists, 20 nurse anaesthetists, 18 anaesthesia residents and 17 nurse anaesthetist students. The instruction on the use of a vernier caliper was oriented to all participants before the study was begun. Basic characteristics of each assessor (age, sex, height, weight, hand-dominance) were determined and recorded. Receives: Diagnostic Test: the caliper venier will be used to measure the airway. | |

The full registered description is in the About this study section and the official record.
Who may be eligible to take part?
The sponsor lists 1 inclusion and 1 exclusion criteria. Eligibility is decided by the study team after screening, so read the full criteria and contact a listed site.
Is this clinical trial currently recruiting?
The record says: finished, as of the sponsor's last update on 22 Oct 2026. Status can change between updates, so confirm with the study contact before making plans.
Where is the study taking place?
The record lists 1 site in Thailand. Whether a site is taking part right now should be confirmed with that site. See every site.

They depend on the study and the treatment, and no study can promise a benefit. The study team explains the known risks during informed consent, before anyone joins; the record itself does not list them.
Are results available for this study?
The study is completed, but results are not available in the source record. That does not mean the treatment did or did not work.
How can a doctor refer a patient or contact the research team?
The record lists no contact. The official record names the sponsor, who can be asked directly. AzTrials does not enrol participants or take referrals.
What does the primary outcome measure?
Discrepancy of airway assessment for intubation (time frame: From enrollment to the end of measurement at 8 weeks). It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.
Where can I read the original study information?
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?
No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.
How often is this information updated?
AzTrials copies changed records from ClinicalTrials.gov every night and reloads the whole registry every week. The sponsor last updated this record on 22 Oct 2026; AzTrials last refreshed its copy on 26 Oct 2026.
