About this study
Official title: Prevalence of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Risk Factors Among Saudi Aged > 18 Years in Taif City
This cross-sectional study assesses the prevalence of previously diagnosed chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and associated risk factors among Saudi adults aged 18 years and older living in Taif City, Saudi Arabia. Surveys and available medical records provide information on respiratory symptoms, smoking, environmental and occupational exposures, and medical history. The COPD Assessment Test (CAT) measures symptom burden. The study examines factors associated with COPD and respiratory symptoms to support local prevention and early detection efforts.
Read the detailed description
This observational, cross-sectional study examines chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and associated demographic, clinical, behavioral, and environmental factors among Saudi adults residing in Taif City, Saudi Arabia. The study addresses limited local evidence concerning COPD in a high-altitude setting, with particular attention to exposures beyond tobacco smoking.
The protocol describes recruitment from community settings and major hospitals in Taif using systematic sampling, selecting every tenth eligible individual from hospital records and community registries. Information is collected through participant surveys and available medical records. Data include demographic characteristics, previous COPD diagnosis, respiratory symptoms, smoking history, secondhand smoke exposure, occupational hazards, indoor pollutants, biofuel and incense use, socioeconomic circumstances, and relevant respiratory medical history.
COPD status is based on a reported or documented previous clinical diagnosis. Spirometric confirmation is not incorporated into the survey; therefore, the study estimates the prevalence of previously diagnosed COPD and may not identify undiagnosed airflow obstruction.
Symptom burden is assessed using the eight-item COPD Assessment Test (CAT). Its domains include cough, sputum production, chest tightness, exertional breathlessness, limitations in daily activities, confidence leaving home, sleep, and energy. Each item is scored from 0 to 5, producing a total score from 0 to 40, with higher scores indicating greater symptom burden. The questionnaire is used to assess symptoms rather than establish a COPD diagnosis.
The minimum sample size was calculated using an assumed prevalence of 50%, a 95% confidence level, and a margin of error of 5%, yielding approximately 384 participants. The uploaded manuscript reports a final sample of 777 participants.
The statistical analysis uses SPSS version 26. Descriptive statistics summarize participant characteristics and exposures. Prevalence estimates are calculated with 95% confidence intervals. Associations between categorical variables and COPD status are examined using chi-square tests. Differences in symptom scores between groups are assessed using independent-samples t-tests and one-way analysis of variance. Statistical significance is defined as a p-value below 0.05. Because the study is cross-sectional, observed associations cannot establish causation.
The protocol specifies written informed consent before participation and confidential handling of personal information, with collected data used solely for research purposes.

What is being measured
The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.
Prevalence of Previously Diagnosed Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Percentage of participants reporting a previous clinical diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, based on questionnaire responses and available medical records. Prevalence is calculated by dividing the number of participants with a previous diagnosis by the total number assessed and multiplying by 100, with a 95% confidence interval. No spirometric confirmation is performed.
Measured: Study period: October 24, 2024-September 20, 2026. Outcome Time Frame: "Baseline (Day 1, at the single survey assessment)."
Secondary outcomes (1)
Associations Between Potential Risk Factors and Previously Diagnosed COPD
Associations between previously diagnosed COPD and demographic characteristics, smoking history, secondhand smoke, occupational and environmental exposures, biofuel and incense use, socioeconomic status, and respiratory medical history, assessed using chi-square tests.
Measured: Study period: October 24, 2024-September 20, 2026. Outcome Time Frame: "Baseline (Day 1, at the single survey assessment)."

The study is completed, but results are not available in the source record. That does not mean the treatment did or did not work.
How can a doctor refer a patient or contact the research team?
The record lists no contact. The official record names the sponsor, who can be asked directly. AzTrials does not enrol participants or take referrals.
What does the primary outcome measure?
Prevalence of Previously Diagnosed Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (time frame: Study period: October 24, 2024-September 20, 2026. Outcome Time Frame: "Baseline (Day 1, at the single survey assessment)."). It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.
Where can I read the original study information?
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?
No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.
How often is this information updated?
AzTrials copies changed records from ClinicalTrials.gov every night and reloads the whole registry every week. The sponsor last updated this record on 27 Oct 2026.
