About this study
Official title: Desarda Repair for Inguinal Hernia in Adolescent Males: A Preliminary Single-Centre Case Series
This retrospective single-centre case series evaluates the feasibility and clinical outcomes of selective open Desarda repair for inguinal hernia in adolescent males treated in a paediatric surgical department. The study focuses on recurrence, postoperative complications, reoperation, persistent groin pain, postoperative length of stay, and follow-up after Desarda repair.
Read the detailed description
The institutional operative database and medical records were reviewed for inguinal hernia surgery performed between January 2016 and 30 May 2026. The registered case series comprises adolescent males aged 11 to 18 years who underwent elective open Desarda repair during this period. Desarda repair was used selectively when intraoperative assessment showed a well-preserved external oblique aponeurosis suitable for tissue-based posterior wall reconstruction. Patients with markedly thinned, attenuated, or fragmented aponeurosis were considered unsuitable for this technique. The study is descriptive and retrospective, with no formal hypothesis testing or comparator group within the registered Desarda cohort.

What participants receive
What participants receive. In a randomised study each person is assigned to one group by chance.
Open Desarda inguinal hernia repairProcedure or surgery
Also called Desarda repair
Open non-mesh posterior wall reconstruction using an undetached strip of the external oblique aponeurosis according to the principles of the Desarda technique.
| Study group | Role | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Desarda repair cohort | Twelve adolescent male patients who underwent 13 elective open Desarda repairs. One patient underwent staged bilateral repair during separate admissions. Receives: Procedure: Open Desarda inguinal hernia repair |
What is being measured
The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.
Number of Desarda repairs with clinically documented ipsilateral inguinal hernia recurrence
Ipsilateral recurrence was defined as a clinically confirmed inguinal hernia occurring on the same side as the index Desarda repair and documented in the medical record during follow-up. Development of a contralateral inguinal hernia was not considered a recurrence.
Measured: From surgery up to 7.5 years after surgery
Secondary outcomes (4)
Number of participants undergoing reoperation after Desarda repair
Any reoperation related to ipsilateral recurrence or postoperative complications following Desarda repair.
Measured: From surgery up to 7.5 years after surgery
Number of participants with persistent groin pain documented in medical records
Binary outcome (yes/no) based on medical record documentation of pain or discomfort in the operated groin persisting beyond 3 months after surgery. No standardized pain scale was used.
Measured: From 3 months after surgery up to 7.5 years after surgery
Number of participants with postoperative complications
Number of participants with at least one postoperative complication, including wound infection, wound dehiscence, inguinal or scrotal swelling, postoperative hydrocele, scrotal haematoma, sensory disturbance, or unplanned readmission. Complications were assessed throughout the available postoperative follow-up for each participant.
Measured: From surgery up to 7.5 years after surgery
Postoperative hospital length of stay in days
Postoperative hospital stay measured in days.
Measured: During the index hospitalization, from surgery to hospital discharge, up to 2 days after surgery

The sponsor lists 2 inclusion and 3 exclusion criteria. Eligibility is decided by the study team after screening, so read the full criteria and contact a listed site.
Is this clinical trial currently recruiting?
The record says: finished, as of the sponsor's last update on 13 Oct 2026. Status can change between updates, so confirm with the study contact before making plans.
Where is the study taking place?
The record lists 1 site in Poland. Whether a site is taking part right now should be confirmed with that site. See every site.
What are the possible benefits and risks?
They depend on the study and the treatment, and no study can promise a benefit. The study team explains the known risks during informed consent, before anyone joins; the record itself does not list them.
Are results available for this study?
The study is completed, but results are not available in the source record. That does not mean the treatment did or did not work.
How can a doctor refer a patient or contact the research team?
The record lists no contact. The official record names the sponsor, who can be asked directly. AzTrials does not enrol participants or take referrals.
What does the primary outcome measure?
Number of Desarda repairs with clinically documented ipsilateral inguinal hernia recurrence (time frame: From surgery up to 7.5 years after surgery). It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.
Where can I read the original study information?
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?
No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.
How often is this information updated?
AzTrials copies changed records from ClinicalTrials.gov every night and reloads the whole registry every week. The sponsor last updated this record on 13 Oct 2026.
