About this study

Official title: Ultrasonographic Dimensions of the Radial Artery in Morbidly Obese Patients and the Effect of General Anaesthesia Induction on Arterial Diameter: A Prospective Observational Study With a Nested Randomised Cannula Comparison

This single-centre prospective study measured the internal diameter of the radial artery and the distance between the skin surface and the arterial lumen by ultrasound in 76 adults with a body mass index of 40 kg/m2 or above who were scheduled for elective surgery under general anaesthesia. Measurements were made 2 cm proximal to the radial styloid process before induction of anaesthesia and again 5 minutes after endotracheal intubation, so that each patient served as their own control. The relationship of these measurements with anthropometric variables was examined. Patients were additionally randomized to radial artery cannulation with either an 18 G or a 20 G cannula, and the two cannula gauges were compared with respect to the time to successful cannulation and the number of skin punctures.

Being tested
20 G arterial cannula, 18 G arterial cannula
Keywords
radial artery; ultrasonography, interventional; anaesthesia, general; arterial cannulation; body mass index
Medical subject headings
Obesity

What participants receive

What participants receive. In a randomised study each person is assigned to one group by chance.

  • 20 G arterial cannulaDevice

Ultrasound-guided radial artery cannulation using a 20 G arterial cannula. The probe was placed in the short axis to identify the artery and cannulation was performed in the long axis

  • 18 G arterial cannulaDevice

Ultrasound-guided radial artery cannulation using an 18 G arterial cannula, by the same technique.

What is being measured

The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.

  1. Change in internal diameter of the radial artery

Internal diameter of the radial artery measured by ultrasound in the long-axis view, 2 cm proximal to the radial styloid process, with the wrist in 45 degrees of extension. The outcome is the within-patient difference between the measurement before induction of anaesthesia and the measurement after intubation.

Measured: Before induction of anaesthesia and 5 minutes after endotracheal intubation

Secondary outcomes (4)
  1. Distance between the skin surface and the radial artery lumen

Distance from the skin surface to the near wall of the radial artery lumen, measured by ultrasound at the same site and in the same plane as the diameter measurement.

Measured: Before induction of anaesthesia and 5 minutes after endotracheal intubation

  2. Relationship between arterial dimensions and anthropometric variables

Correlation of radial artery diameter and skin-to-lumen distance with body weight, height, body mass index, body surface area, ideal body weight, wrist circumference, arm circumference and age.

Measured: At the time of the through study completion, an average of 4 months

  3. Time to successful cannulation

Interval from placement of the ultrasound probe on the skin to the appearance of the arterial pressure waveform on the monitor. Compared between the two cannula gauges. Exploratory outcome.

Measured: During radial artery cannulation, immediately after the second ultrasound measurement

  4. Number of skin punctures required for successful cannulation

Number of skin punctures until successful cannulation, compared between the two cannula gauges. Exploratory outcome

Measured: During radial artery cannulation, immediately after the second ultrasound measurement

Questions about this trial

What is this clinical trial studying?

A study testing 20 G arterial cannula and 18 G arterial cannula in people with Obesity, Morbid Catheterization, Peripheral, run by Hilal Subaşı Artıran at 1 site in Turkey (Türkiye).

The full registered description is in the About this study section and the official record.

Who may be eligible to take part?

The sponsor lists 4 inclusion and 7 exclusion criteria. Eligibility is decided by the study team after screening, so read the full criteria and contact a listed site.

Is this clinical trial currently recruiting?

The record says: finished, as of the sponsor's last update on 9 Oct 2026. Status can change between updates, so confirm with the study contact before making plans.

Where is the study taking place?

The record lists 1 site in Turkey (Türkiye). Whether a site is taking part right now should be confirmed with that site. See every site.

What are the possible benefits and risks?

They depend on the study and the treatment, and no study can promise a benefit. The study team explains the known risks during informed consent, before anyone joins; the record itself does not list them.

Are results available for this study?

The study is completed, but results are not available in the source record. That does not mean the treatment did or did not work.

How can a doctor refer a patient or contact the research team?

The record lists no contact. The official record names the sponsor, who can be asked directly. AzTrials does not enrol participants or take referrals.

What does the primary outcome measure?

Change in internal diameter of the radial artery (time frame: Before induction of anaesthesia and 5 minutes after endotracheal intubation). It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.

Where can I read the original study information?
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?

No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.

How often is this information updated?

AzTrials copies changed records from ClinicalTrials.gov every night and reloads the whole registry every week. The sponsor last updated this record on 9 Oct 2026.
