About this study
Official title: Diagnostic Value of Peripheral Nerve Ultrasound in Children With Guillain-Barré Syndrome
This prospective observational study aims to evaluate peripheral nerve ultrasound findings, particularly nerve cross-sectional area, in children with Guillain-Barré syndrome.
Read the detailed description
Guillain-Barré syndrome is an acute immune-mediated neuropathy. High-resolution peripheral nerve ultrasound can measure nerve cross-sectional area and detect structural abnormalities.
This observational study will perform peripheral nerve ultrasound and nerve conduction studies in children aged 1 to 17 years with Guillain-Barré syndrome at baseline and at 3 months.

What participants receive
What participants receive. In a randomised study each person is assigned to one group by chance.
| Study group | Role | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Children with Guillain-Barré Syndrome | Children aged 1 to 17 years with Guillain-Barré syndrome undergoing peripheral nerve ultrasound and nerve conduction studies. |
What is being measured
The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.
Mean nerve cross-sectional area
Mean cross-sectional area of selected peripheral nerves measured by high-resolution ultrasound in mm².
Measured: Baseline
Secondary outcomes (4)
Change in nerve cross-sectional area
Mean change in peripheral nerve cross-sectional area in mm² from baseline to 3 months.
Measured: At 3 months
Mean distal motor latency
Mean distal motor latency measured by nerve conduction study in milliseconds.
Measured: Baseline
Mean compound muscle action potential amplitude
Mean compound muscle action potential amplitude measured by nerve conduction study in millivolts.
Measured: Baseline
GBS Disability Scale Score
Mean Guillain-Barré Syndrome disability scale score (range 0 to 6, higher scores indicate worse disability).
Measured: Baseline

Questions about this trial
What is this clinical trial studying?
An observational study of Guillain-Barre Syndrome, run by Assiut University.
The full registered description is in the About this study section and the official record.
Who may be eligible to take part?
The sponsor lists 3 inclusion and 6 exclusion criteria. Eligibility is decided by the study team after screening, so read the full criteria and contact a listed site.
Is this clinical trial currently recruiting?
The record says: opening soon, as of the sponsor's last update on 8 Oct 2026. Status can change between updates, so confirm with the study contact before making plans.
What are the possible benefits and risks?
They depend on the study and the treatment, and no study can promise a benefit. The study team explains the known risks during informed consent, before anyone joins; the record itself does not list them.
Are results available for this study?
This study is still under way. Results are not available in the source record yet.
How can a doctor refer a patient or contact the research team?
Contact Ahmed S Ahmed, Resident (+20 12 70363133, as99709@gmail.com), or a site near the patient. AzTrials does not enrol participants or take referrals.
What does the primary outcome measure?
Mean nerve cross-sectional area (time frame: Baseline). It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.
Where can I read the original study information?
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?
No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.
How often is this information updated?
AzTrials copies changed records from ClinicalTrials.gov every night and reloads the whole registry every week. The sponsor last updated this record on 8 Oct 2026.
