About this study
This is a family-centered bereavement intervention for families when a parent with dependent children has died. The goals of the manual-based intervention, the Family Talk Intervention (FTI), are to facilitate family communication about grief-related subjects, support parenting and making the children visible. Families are recruited from specialized palliative care units in the Stockholm region by health care social workers during 2024-2025. FTI consists of six meetings with the family (the whole family and each family member separately) after about 3-4 months after death of a parent. Follow-up interviews with bereaved family members over the age of 6 are conducted, face-to-face or digitally. The families experiences will be analyzed with regard to structure and content of FTI, timing of FTI, and the potential benefits of the intervention. The families suggested improvements will be used in the design of a full-scale trial.

| Study group | Role | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Intervention: the Family Talk Intervention | Experimental | This intervention consists of 6 meetings: Meetings 1-2 include only the parent(s) and focus on their experiences of the situation, as well as the consequences of the loss for each family member. Meeting 3 is held with each child. It focuses on the child's life situation, feelings, understanding of the loss, hobbies, the relationship with their parent(s) and siblings, and the social network. Meeting 4 includes the parent(s) and focuses on planning the family meeting. The family members narratives are taken into account and serve as a guide for the upcoming family meeting. Meeting 5 is "the family talk" and consists of questions and issues raised earlier by the family members. This family meeting can be seen as a starting point for communication within the family. Meeting 6 is a follow-up with all family members. The meeting is guided by the family members' needs, e.g., regarding communication and parenting. Extra meetings are available when needed.
