About this study

Official title: Calcium Gluconate Activated Versus Non-Activated Platelet Rich Plasma in Anterior Disc Displacement With Reduction of the Temporomandibular Joint: Randomized Clinical Trial.

To compare the efficacy of retro discal injection of calcium gluconate-activated PRP versus non-activated PRP in adults with Anterior Disc Displacement with Reduction (ADDWR). Efficacy will be measured by the reduction of symptoms and the restoration of function, specifically targeting the normal Maximum Mouth Opening (MMO) range

Read the detailed description

To compare the efficacy of retro discal injection of calcium gluconate-activated PRP versus non-activated PRP in adults with Anterior Disc Displacement With Reduction (ADDWR). Efficacy will be measured by the reduction of symptoms and the restoration of function, specifically targeting the normal Maximum Mouth Opening (MMO) range.

Although laboratory evidence indicates that activation with Calcium Gluconate significantly enhances growth factor release compared to non-activated (resting) PRP, it remains clinically unproven whether this biochemical advantage translates into superior symptomatic relief and functional disc repositioning in TMJ patients. This trial seeks to determine if the additional step of activation yields a statistically significant clinical benefit over the simpler, non-activated technique.

By combining the biologically optimized injectate (Calcium Gluconate-Activated PRP) with the anatomically specific retrodiscal injection site-which is critical for addressing disc instability-this study aims to define a superior, evidence-based protocol. Determining the efficacy of this specific combination is essential for establishing a "gold standard" for non-surgical ADDWR management.

What participants receive

What participants receive. In a randomised study each person is assigned to one group by chance.

  • activated platelet-rich plasmaProcedure or surgery

Intra-articular retrodiscal injection of autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) activated with 0.5 milliliters of 10% sterile calcium gluconate per 5 milliliters of prepared PRP, administered as a single anatomical landmark-guided injection into the retrodiscal tissue.

  • non-activated platelet-rich plasmaProcedure or surgery

Intra-articular retrodiscal injection of autologous non-activated platelet-rich plasma, prepared using identical double-centrifugation technique and administered using identical injection protocol and volume

Questions about this trial

What is this clinical trial studying?

A study testing activated platelet-rich plasma and non-activated platelet-rich plasma in people with Temporomandibular Joint Disorders, run by Cairo University at 1 site in Egypt.

The full registered description is in the About this study section and the official record.

Who may be eligible to take part?

The sponsor lists 5 inclusion and 6 exclusion criteria. Eligibility is decided by the study team after screening, so read the full criteria and contact a listed site.

Is this clinical trial currently recruiting?

The record says: looking for participants now, as of the sponsor's last update on 2 Oct 2026. Status can change between updates, so confirm with the study contact before making plans.

Where is the study taking place?

The record lists 1 site in Egypt. Whether a site is taking part right now should be confirmed with that site. See every site.

What are the possible benefits and risks?

They depend on the study and the treatment, and no study can promise a benefit. The study team explains the known risks during informed consent, before anyone joins; the record itself does not list them.

Are results available for this study?

This study is still under way. Results are not available in the source record yet.

How can a doctor refer a patient or contact the research team?

Contact Mohamed A. Osama, BDS (01013127607, mohamed.madkour@dentistry.cu.edu.eg), or a site near the patient. AzTrials does not enrol participants or take referrals.

What does the primary outcome measure?

Maximal Interincisal Opening (MIO) (time frame: 3 months). It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.

Where can I read the original study information?
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?

No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.

How often is this information updated?

AzTrials copies changed records from ClinicalTrials.gov every night and reloads the whole registry every week. The sponsor last updated this record on 2 Oct 2026.
