Post Operative PainNCT07855549
Comparative Study Between Erector Spinae Plane Block Versus Combined Pectoralis and Serratus Interfascial Plane Blocks for Post-operative Analgesia After Thoracic Surgery.
A study testing Erector spinae plane block and Combined pectoralis and serratus anterior plane blocks in people with Post Operative Pain and Thoracic Surgery, run by Minia University at 1 site in Egypt.
Trial summary
The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of combined pectoralis II and serratus interfascial plane blocks in comparison with erector spinae plane block on post-operative analgesia after thoracic surgeries. Read more about this study

About this study
Official title: Randomized Controlled Double Blinded Comparative Study Between Erector Spinae Plane Block Versus Combined Pectoralis and Serratus Interfascial Plane Blocks for Post-operative Analgesia After Thoracic Surgery.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of combined pectoralis II and serratus interfascial plane blocks in comparison with erector spinae plane block on post-operative analgesia after thoracic surgeries.
- Conditions
- Post Operative Pain, Thoracic Surgery
- Being tested
- Erector spinae plane block, Combined pectoralis and serratus anterior plane blocks

What participants receive
What participants receive. In a randomised study each person is assigned to one group by chance.
Erector spinae plane blockProcedure or surgery
Also called ESPB
Patients will be positioned in the lateral position, The thoracic vertebrae spinous process convenient to level of incision (T5-T7:the level which covers thoracic area) will be identified and the transducer will be placed approximately to 2-3 cm lateral to midline ,The needle tip will be advanced until it is located in the interfascial plane deep to the erector spinae muscle group and superior to the transverse process. Once in position, 30 ml bupivacaine 0.25% will be injected under ultrasound guidance. Correct needle-tip position will be confirmed by the presence of linear spread between the transverse process and the presence of linear spread between the transverse process and the erector spinae muscle group.
Combined pectoralis and serratus anterior plane blocksProcedure or surgery
Also called PECS &SAPB
Serratus anterior plane block will be performed with the patient in the supine position , The probe will be placed in a sagittal position, the mid-axillary region of the thoracic cage. The needle will be advanced with an in-plane technique and 20 ml bupivacaine 0.25% will be injected .
PECS block will be performed at the same position. The ultrasound probe will be placed obliquely over the lateral third of the clavicle. the needle will be advanced, in the same plane as the probe, from the medial to lateral direction ,10 ml 0.25% bupivacaine will be injected. Then the needle will be advanced to the fascial plane between the pectoralis minor and serratus anterior muscles, at which point an additional 10 ml 0.25% bupivacaine will be administered.
| Study group | Role | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Erector spinae group | Active comparator | Sonar guided interfacial plane block deep to erector spinae muscle that targets dorsal and central Rami of spinal nerves Receives: Procedure: Erector spinae plane block |
| Combined pectoralis and serratus anterior group | Active comparator | Sonar guided interfacial plane blocks firstly pectoralis plane block that targets lateral and medial pectoral nerves then serratus anterior plane block that targets lateral branches of intercostal nerves Receives: Procedure: Combined pectoralis and serratus anterior plane blocks |
| Controlled group | No intervention | This group doesn't receive any nerve block |
