Improving Goals of Care Conversations Between Doctors and Young Adults With Cancer
A study testing Jumpstart GOCC intervention in people with Cancer, run by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center at 7 sites in United States.
Trial summary
The purpose of this study is to adapt a goals of care communication tool, called Jumpstart, for adolescent and young adult cancer patients (also called AYAC). About this study
Official title: Adaptation of an Evidence-based Goals of Care Communication Intervention for Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Patients (AYAC)
The purpose of this study is to adapt a goals of care communication tool, called Jumpstart, for adolescent and young adult cancer patients (also called AYAC). Goals of care conversations are discussions between patients and their doctors about the patient's wishes, values, and priorities for their care. The Jumpstart tool was created for adult patients to help start these conversations during doctor's appointments. This study will adapt the tool so that it works better for adolescent and young adult patients with cancer. We will also look at whether the tool is practical and useful for AYAC and for medical doctors who see or treat AYAC patients.
Read the detailed description
The goal of this project is to adapt an existing, efficacious goals of care conversations (GOCC) Jumpstart intervention for adolescent and young adult cancer patients (AYAC) using the Cultural Adaptation Process Model (CAPM). This goal will be accomplished in three aims: In Aim 1, we will preliminarily adapt the intervention materials. In Aim 2, we will strengthen the preliminarily adapted materials. In Aim 3, we will pilot test the acceptability, feasibility, fidelity, and preliminary impact of the adapted intervention in a pilot cluster RCT.
Aims 1 and 2 will produce patient and oncologist qualitative data from 24 adolescent and young adult cancer patients (AYAC) and 24 oncologists. Participants will complete individual, semi-structured interviews which will be transcribed into text documents by a professional transcribing service.
In Aim 3, we will pilot test the acceptability, feasibility, fidelity, and preliminary impact of the adapted intervention in a pilot cluster RCT. Participants (10 oncologists and 60 AYACs) will be randomized either to receive a goals of care communication intervention or usual care.
Patients in this aim will complete one survey after their appointment. Constructs that will be measured include: feasibility, fidelity, and acceptability (primary outcomes), and quality of communication during GOCC (secondary outcome) measured via patient self-report of quality communication during the GOCC.

Questions about this trial
What is this clinical trial studying?
A study testing Jumpstart GOCC intervention in people with Cancer, run by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center at 7 sites in United States.
The full registered description is in the About this study section and the official record.
Who may be eligible to take part?
The sponsor lists 10 inclusion and 2 exclusion criteria. Eligibility is decided by the study team after screening, so read the full criteria and contact a listed site.
Is this clinical trial currently recruiting?
The record says: enrolling by invitation, as of the sponsor's last update on 23 Oct 2026. Status can change between updates, so confirm with the study contact before making plans.
Where is the study taking place?
The record lists 7 sites in United States. Whether a site is taking part right now should be confirmed with that site. See every site.
What are the possible benefits and risks?
They depend on the study and the treatment, and no study can promise a benefit. The study team explains the known risks during informed consent, before anyone joins; the record itself does not list them.
Are results available for this study?
This study is still under way. Results are not available in the source record yet.
How can a doctor refer a patient or contact the research team?
The record lists no contact. The official record names the sponsor, who can be asked directly. AzTrials does not enrol participants or take referrals.
What does the primary outcome measure?
Number of participants who participate (time frame: 2 years). It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.
Where can I read the original study information?
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?
No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.
How often is this information updated?
AzTrials copies changed records from ClinicalTrials.gov every night and reloads the whole registry every week. The sponsor last updated this record on 23 Oct 2026.
