About this study

Official title: Assessment of Respiratory Functions, Functional Capacity, Posture, and Quality of Life in Pectus Excavatum and Pectus Carinatum Deformities

Pectus excavatum (PE) and pectus carinatum (PC) are chest wall deformities that may influence respiratory function, physical capacity, posture, and quality of life. This observational, cross-sectional study aims to provide a comprehensive and multidimensional evaluation of children with PE and PC and compare their findings with healthy controls. By examining multiple aspects of respiratory and physical function, postural characteristics, and quality of life, the study seeks to provide a broader understanding of the overall impact of these deformities.

What is being measured

The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.

  1. Forced Vital Capacity (FVC)

Forced vital capacity (FVC) was assessed using spirometry and expressed as a percentage of the predicted value.

    Measured: Baseline

  2. Forced Expiratory Volume in One Second (FEV1)

Forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) was assessed using spirometry and expressed as a percentage of the predicted value.

    Measured: Baseline

  3. FEV1/FVC Ratio

The FEV1/FVC ratio was assessed using spirometry and expressed as a percentage of the predicted value.

    Measured: Baseline

  4. Maximal Voluntary Ventilation (MVV)

Maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV) was assessed using spirometry and expressed as a percentage of the predicted value.

    Measured: Baseline

Secondary outcomes (12)
  1. Respiratory Muscle Strength

Respiratory muscle strength was assessed by measuring maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximal expiratory pressure (MEP) using a portable electronic mouth pressure device.

    Measured: Baseline

  2. Physical Activity Level

Physical activity level was assessed using the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Older Children (PAQ-C). Scores range from 1 to 5, with higher scores indicating higher levels of physical activity.

    Measured: Baseline

  3. Aerobic Capacity

Aerobic capacity was assessed using the modified Chester Step Test

    Measured: Baseline

  4. Body Composition

Body composition was assessed using triceps and subscapular skinfold measurements

    Measured: Baseline

  5. Handgrip Strength

Handgrip strength was assessed using a handgrip dynamometer.

    Measured: Baseline

  6. Neck and Trunk Muscle Strength

Neck and trunk muscle strength was assessed using a hand-held dynamometer.

    Measured: Baseline

  7. Muscle Endurance - Sit-Up Test

Muscle endurance was assessed using sit-up test

    Measured: Baseline

  8. Muscle Endurance - Trunk Lift Test

Muscle endurance was assessed using trunk lift test.

    Measured: Baseline

  9. Muscle Endurance - Push-Up Test

Muscle endurance was assessed using push-up test.

    Measured: Baseline

  10. Flexibility

Lower back and hamstring flexibility was assessed using the Sit-and-Reach Test.

    Measured: Baseline

  11. Posture

Posture was assessed using lateral photographic postural analysis

    Measured: Baseline

  12. Health-Related Quality of Life Assessed by the Nuss Questionnaire

Health-related quality of life was assessed using the Turkish version of the Nuss Questionnaire

    Measured: Baseline

Questions about this trial

What is this clinical trial studying?

An observational study of Pectus Excavatum and Pectus Carinatum, run by Eastern Mediterranean University at 1 site in Turkey (Türkiye).

The full registered description is in the About this study section and the official record.

Who may be eligible to take part?

The sponsor lists 3 inclusion and 10 exclusion criteria. Eligibility is decided by the study team after screening, so read the full criteria and contact a listed site.

Is this clinical trial currently recruiting?

The record says: finished, as of the sponsor's last update on 28 Sep 2026. Status can change between updates, so confirm with the study contact before making plans.

Where is the study taking place?

The record lists 1 site in Turkey (Türkiye). Whether a site is taking part right now should be confirmed with that site. See every site.

What are the possible benefits and risks?

They depend on the study and the treatment, and no study can promise a benefit. The study team explains the known risks during informed consent, before anyone joins; the record itself does not list them.

Are results available for this study?

The study is completed, but results are not available in the source record. That does not mean the treatment did or did not work.

How can a doctor refer a patient or contact the research team?

The record lists no contact. The official record names the sponsor, who can be asked directly. AzTrials does not enrol participants or take referrals.

What does the primary outcome measure?

Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) (time frame: Baseline). The study lists 4 primary outcomes in all. It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.

Where can I read the original study information?
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?

No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.

How often is this information updated?

AzTrials copies changed records from ClinicalTrials.gov every night and reloads the whole registry every week. The sponsor last updated this record on 28 Sep 2026.
