About this study

Official title: Comparison of Recall and Perceived Applicability of Ganzouri Airway Scoring System Versus LEMON Score for Airway Assessment Among Anesthesia Residents; a Prospective Observational Study

Our aim is to compare the recall and perceived clinical applicability of Ganzouri airway scoring system versus LEMON score for airway assessment from residents' perspective.

Read the detailed description

Securing a patent airway stands as one of the most fundamental obligations in anesthetic practice, and the timely recognition of a potentially difficult airway prior to induction is of paramount importance for patient safety.

Two of the most widely recognized examples are the Ganzouri Airway Scoring system and the LEMON score. The Ganzouri Airway scoring system integrates seven distinct clinical parameters; mouth opening, thyromental distance, Mallampati classification, neck range of motion, ability to prognath, body weight, and history of prior difficult intubation, each carrying a weighted numerical value whose sum reflects the probability of encountering a difficult airway.

Being tested
Ganzouri Airway Scoring System, LEMON Score

What participants receive

What participants receive. In a randomised study each person is assigned to one group by chance.

  • Ganzouri Airway Scoring SystemOther

This scoring system evaluates seven parameters:

    1. Mouth opening (interincisor distance)
    2. Thyromental distance
    3. Mallampati classification
    4. Neck movement
    5. Ability to prognath (mandibular protrusion)
    6. Body weight
    7. History of difficult intubation Each parameter was scored, score interpretation from 1- 4 with increasing difficulty , ≥4 suggesting awake intubation.
  • LEMON ScoreOther

    The LEMON mnemonic represents:

    1. Look externally (facial trauma, large incisors, beard, etc.)
    2. Evaluate 3-3-2 rule (mouth opening, hyomental distance, thyroidtomouth distance)
    3. Mallampati score
    4. Obstruction (presence of airway obstruction)
    5. Neck mobility

What is being measured

The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.

  1. Mean total immediate recall score

The total immediate recall score was assessed using a structured recall checklist within 30 minutes after completion of the educational lectures.

Measured: Within 30 minutes after completion of the educational lectures

Secondary outcomes (2)
  1. Mean total delayed recall score at Day 14

The total delayed recall score will be assessed using the same structured recall checklist 14 days after completion of the educational lectures.

Measured: 14 days after completion of the educational lectures

  2. Resident satisfaction

Residents' satisfaction was assessed using a structured post-lecture questionnaire with five-point Likert-scale responses.

Measured: 14 days after completion of the educational lectures

Questions about this trial

What is this clinical trial studying?

An observational study of Recall and Perceived Applicability, run by Cairo University at 1 site in Egypt.

The full registered description is in the About this study section and the official record.

Who may be eligible to take part?

The sponsor lists 5 inclusion and 3 exclusion criteria. Eligibility is decided by the study team after screening, so read the full criteria and contact a listed site.

Is this clinical trial currently recruiting?

The record says: looking for participants now, as of the sponsor's last update on 25 Sep 2026. Status can change between updates, so confirm with the study contact before making plans.

Where is the study taking place?

The record lists 1 site in Egypt. Whether a site is taking part right now should be confirmed with that site. See every site.

What are the possible benefits and risks?

They depend on the study and the treatment, and no study can promise a benefit. The study team explains the known risks during informed consent, before anyone joins; the record itself does not list them.

Are results available for this study?

This study is still under way. Results are not available in the source record yet.

How can a doctor refer a patient or contact the research team?

Contact Ghada A Sherif, MD (00201006153615, drghadasherif@gmail.com), or a site near the patient. AzTrials does not enrol participants or take referrals.

What does the primary outcome measure?

Mean total immediate recall score (time frame: Within 30 minutes after completion of the educational lectures). It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.

Where can I read the original study information?
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?

No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.

How often is this information updated?

AzTrials copies changed records from ClinicalTrials.gov every night and reloads the whole registry every week. The sponsor last updated this record on 25 Sep 2026.
