Pattern and Surgical Outcome of Papillary Thyroid Cancer at Sohag University Hospitals
An observational study of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma and Thyroid Cancer, run by Sohag University.
Trial summary
The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinicopathological pattern and surgical outcome of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) at Sohag University Hospitals. This will help improve local risk stratification, optimize surgical decision-making, and guide future management strategies for patients with PTC in this region. Read more about this study

About this study
Official title: Pattern and Surgical Outcome of Papillary Thyroid Cancer: A Case Series Study at Sohag University Hospitals
Read the detailed description
Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common histological subtype of thyroid cancer, representing about 80-85% of cases. This study is a case-series study with both retrospective (June 2023 - June 2026) and prospective (June 2026 - March 2027) components, conducted at the Department of General Surgery, Sohag University Hospitals.
All patients diagnosed with papillary thyroid carcinoma and managed at Sohag University Hospitals during the study period will be included. Data collection includes baseline demographic and clinical features, preoperative laboratory tests (thyroid function tests and serum calcium), neck ultrasonography findings (ACR TI-RADS category, nodule size, and lymph node assessment), fine-needle aspiration cytology (Bethesda System), surgical intervention types (hemithyroidectomy, total thyroidectomy, and neck dissection), final histopathological characteristics (tumor size, multifocality, lymphovascular invasion, extrathyroidal extension, and nodal status), and early postoperative complications (hypocalcemia, recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy, hematoma, seroma, and wound sepsis).
- Conditions
- Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma, Thyroid Cancer
- Keywords
- papillary thyroid carcinoma, thyroidectomy, neck dissection, surgical outcomes, clinicopathological pattern
- Medical subject headings
- Thyroid Cancer, Papillary, Thyroid Neoplasms
What participants receive
What participants receive. In a randomised study each person is assigned to one group by chance.
| Study group | Role | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma | All patients diagnosed with papillary thyroid carcinoma (and its variants) managed at Sohag University Hospitals during the study period (June 2023 to March 2027). |
What is being measured
The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.
Prevalence of Extrathyroidal Extension in Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma
Percentage of participants with histologically confirmed extrathyroidal extension.
Measured: 9 months
Secondary outcomes (3)
Incidence of Early Postoperative Surgical Complications
Percentage of participants experiencing early postoperative complications including hypocalcemia, recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy, hematoma, seroma, or wound sepsis.
Measured: 9 months
Incidence of Multifocal Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma
Percentage of participants found to have multifocal tumors on final histopathological examination.
Measured: 9 months
Rate of Cervical Lymph Node Metastasis
Percentage of participants with histopathologically confirmed cervical lymph node metastasis.
Measured: 9 months

Questions about this trial
What is this clinical trial studying?
An observational study of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma and Thyroid Cancer, run by Sohag University.
The full registered description is in the About this study section and the official record.
Who may be eligible to take part?
The sponsor lists 3 inclusion and 3 exclusion criteria. Eligibility is decided by the study team after screening, so read the full criteria and contact a listed site.
Is this clinical trial currently recruiting?
The record says: opening soon, as of the sponsor's last update on 16 Sep 2026. Status can change between updates, so confirm with the study contact before making plans.
What are the possible benefits and risks?
They depend on the study and the treatment, and no study can promise a benefit. The study team explains the known risks during informed consent, before anyone joins; the record itself does not list them.
Are results available for this study?
This study is still under way. Results are not available in the source record yet.
How can a doctor refer a patient or contact the research team?
Contact Ahmed Aboulabed Resident Ahmed Aboulabed Ahmed Mousa, resident (01114522110, ahmed.aboulabed@yahoo.com), or a site near the patient. AzTrials does not enrol participants or take referrals.
What does the primary outcome measure?
Prevalence of Extrathyroidal Extension in Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma (time frame: 9 months). It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.
Where can I read the original study information?
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?
No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.
How often is this information updated?
AzTrials copies changed records from ClinicalTrials.gov every night and reloads the whole registry every week. The sponsor last updated this record on 16 Sep 2026.
