About this study

Official title: Artificial Intelligence-Based Multidimensional Symptom Management (AIMS) Invention to Reduce Symptom Burden and Improve Quality of Life Among Post-Treatment Breast Cancer Survivors: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial (AIMS-BC Trial)

This pilot randomized controlled trial will test the feasibility and acceptability of an Artificial Intelligence-based Multidimensional Symptom Management (AIMS) intervention for post-treatment breast cancer survivors. Thirty-six participants will be randomly assigned (1:1) to receive either the AIMS intervention or usual care. Outcomes include feasibility (recruitment and retention), adherence, acceptability, symptom burden, psychological distress, quality of life, and safety of the AIMS intervention.

Read the detailed description

The AIMS platform is an AI-enabled digital intervention that provides personalized symptom management support through automated monitoring, tailored recommendations, and interactive communication.

A pilot randomized controlled trial will be conducted. Thirty-six eligible post-treatment breast cancer survivors will be recruited through community organizations. Participants will be randomized into two parallel groups. The intervention group will receive the AIMS application alongside standard survivorship care, while the control group will receive usual care only. Outcome assessments will occur at baseline (T0), four weeks (T1), and twelve weeks (T2).

What is being measured

The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.

  1. Recruitment rate

Number and percentage of eligible individuals who provide informed consent and are randomized. Recruitment rate will be calculated as: number randomized ÷ number eligible × 100.

Measured: From recruitment commencement until completion of recruitment.

  2. Participant retention at Week 12

Number and percentage of randomized participants who complete the Week 12 assessment. Retention will be calculated as: number completing the Week 12 assessment ÷ number randomized × 100.

    Measured: Week 12

  3. Adherence to the AIMS intervention

Adherence will be assessed using system-generated usage data (e.g., frequency of logins) and supplemented by participant-reported usage logs.

Measured: Weekly during Weeks 1-12, summarized at Weeks 4 and 12.

  4. Acceptability and usability of the AIMS platform

Among intervention-group participants, acceptability and usability will be assessed using the study-specific AIMS feedback questionnaire.

    Measured: Weeks 4 and 12.

Secondary outcomes (6)
  1. Traditional Chinese MD Anderson Symptom Inventory Symptom-Severity Score

The Chinese MD Anderson Symptom Inventory symptom-severity scale contains 13 symptoms rated from 0 ("not present") to 10 ("as bad as you can imagine"). The mean symptom-severity score ranges from 0 to 10, with higher scores indicating greater symptom burden.

Measured: Baseline, Week 4, and Week 12.

  2. Kessler Psychological Distress Scale 10-Item Total Score

Psychological distress will be measured using the 10-item Kessler Psychological Distress Scale. Total scores range from 10 to 50, with higher scores indicating greater psychological distress.

Measured: Baseline, Week 4, and Week 12.

  3. Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale

Anxiety and depression will be measured using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Separate anxiety and depression subscale scores range from 0 to 21; higher scores indicate greater symptom severity.

Measured: Baseline, Week 4, and Week 12.

  4. Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast

Quality of life will be measured using the 37-item Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast, Version 4. The total score ranges from 0 to 148, with higher scores indicating better quality of life.

Measured: Baseline, Week 4, and Week 12.

  5. Health-services utilization

Participant-reported use of healthcare services, including the number of relevant outpatient visits, emergency-department visits, and hospital admissions during the specified recall period. Each service category will be reported separately.

Measured: Baseline, Week 4, and Week 12.

  6. Adverse events associated with AIMS

Number and percentage of participants experiencing adverse events or negative experiences considered related to the AIMS intervention, including emotional distress, fatigue, or discomfort associated with platform use. Events will be recorded when reported and summarized by severity and relatedness.

Measured: Continuously from randomization through Week 12.

Questions about this trial

What is this clinical trial studying?

A study testing AIMS platform in people with Breast Cancer and Cancer Survivorship, run by Hong Kong Metropolitan University.

The full registered description is in the About this study section and the official record.

Who may be eligible to take part?

The sponsor lists 4 inclusion and 3 exclusion criteria. Eligibility is decided by the study team after screening, so read the full criteria and contact a listed site.

Is this clinical trial currently recruiting?

The record says: opening soon, as of the sponsor's last update on 22 Sep 2026. Status can change between updates, so confirm with the study contact before making plans.

What are the possible benefits and risks?

They depend on the study and the treatment, and no study can promise a benefit. The study team explains the known risks during informed consent, before anyone joins; the record itself does not list them.

Are results available for this study?

This study is still under way. Results are not available in the source record yet.

How can a doctor refer a patient or contact the research team?

Contact Xianliang Liu, MD, PhD ((852) 3970 8790, dxliu@hkmu.edu.hk), or a site near the patient. AzTrials does not enrol participants or take referrals.

What does the primary outcome measure?

Recruitment rate (time frame: From recruitment commencement until completion of recruitment.). The study lists 4 primary outcomes in all. It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.

Where can I read the original study information?
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?

No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.

How often is this information updated?

AzTrials copies changed records from ClinicalTrials.gov every night and reloads the whole registry every week. The sponsor last updated this record on 22 Sep 2026.
