About this study

Official title: A Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Pilot Study Evaluating a Probiotic Intervention for Mental Health

This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study will evaluate the effects of four weeks of supplementation with a probiotic on mental health in healthy adults aged 18-30 years. Participants will be randomized to receive either probiotic or placebo and will complete study assessments at baseline and end of intervention, and will complete a range of behavioral, physiological, and questionnaire-based assessments before and after the intervention. The primary objective is to assess the effect on emotional reactivity measured in a virtual reality scenario at the end of the intervention. This exploratory study is intended to generate data to inform future clinical research.

What participants receive

What participants receive. In a randomised study each person is assigned to one group by chance.

  • ProbioticDietary supplement

Participants will be instructed to take one capsule once daily in the morning with a meal and water.

  • PlaceboDietary supplement

What is being measured

The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.

  1. VIRDIS: Rating of unpleasantness in a virtual reality social scenario

Participants complete a virtual reality-based assessment (VIRDIS) and rate their level of unpleasantness following exposure to a predefined social scenario. Unpleasantness is assessed on a 5-point scale ranging from 1 (not at all unpleasant) to 5 (very unpleasant).

Measured: This outcome is assessed only at treatment completion (at week 4).

Secondary outcomes (3)
  1. VIRDIS: a composite score of ratings of unpleasantness across all virtual reality scenarios

This outcome comprises the mean unpleasantness score across all VR scenarios in the VIRDIS test on a scale ranging from 1 (not at all unpleasant) to 5 (very unpleasant).

Measured: This outcome is assessed only at treatment completion (at week 4)

  2. VIRDIS: heart rate

Heart rate is measured during the VIRDIS assessment (using a wearable physiological monitoring device). Heart rate (pulse) is reported in beats per minute (bpm). Higher scores indicating higher heart rate.

Measured: This outcome is assessed only at treatment completion (at week 4).

  3. Short Form 36 - Energy/Vitality subscale

The SF-36 questionnaire will be administered in its entirety. The Energy/Vitality subscale (items 23, 27, 29, and 31) is designated as a secondary outcome measure.

Measured: Change from baseline to treatment completion (at week 4)

Questions about this trial

What is this clinical trial studying?

A study testing Probiotic in people with Healthy Adult Participants, run by Mental Health Centre Copenhagen, Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg Hospital.

The full registered description is in the About this study section and the official record.

Who may be eligible to take part?

The sponsor lists 4 inclusion and 35 exclusion criteria. Eligibility is decided by the study team after screening, so read the full criteria and contact a listed site.

Is this clinical trial currently recruiting?

The record says: opening soon, as of the sponsor's last update on 7 Aug 2026. Status can change between updates, so confirm with the study contact before making plans.

What are the possible benefits and risks?

They depend on the study and the treatment, and no study can promise a benefit. Some participants in this study may receive a placebo. The study team explains the known risks during informed consent, before anyone joins; the record itself does not list them.

Are results available for this study?

This study is still under way. Results are not available in the source record yet.

How can a doctor refer a patient or contact the research team?

Contact Kamilla Woznica Miskowiak, Professor, DMSc, DPhil (+4522771617, kamilla.woznica.miskowiak@regionh.dk), or a site near the patient. AzTrials does not enrol participants or take referrals.

What does the primary outcome measure?

VIRDIS: Rating of unpleasantness in a virtual reality social scenario (time frame: This outcome is assessed only at treatment completion (at week 4).). It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.

Where can I read the original study information?
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?

No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.

How often is this information updated?

AzTrials copies changed records from ClinicalTrials.gov every night and reloads the whole registry every week. The sponsor last updated this record on 7 Aug 2026.
