About this study

Official title: Accelerated Low-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (LIFU) for Chronic Pain and Generalized Anxiety Disorder: A Proof-of-Concept Case Series

A proof of concept case study to investigate accelerated LIFU protocol in chronic pain and anxiety populations.

Read the detailed description

A single-arm, open label, 2 cohort (chronic pain/GAD) case study with extended (6 months) follow-up following accelerated low-intensity focused ultrasound for neuromodulation.

Being tested
Low Intensity Focused Ultrasound
Medical subject headings
Chronic Pain, Generalized Anxiety Disorder

What participants receive

What participants receive. In a randomised study each person is assigned to one group by chance.

  • Low Intensity Focused UltrasoundDevice

Low-Intensity Focused Ultrasound applied multiple times in a single study visit.

What is being measured

The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.

  1. Safety - monitoring of possible symptoms

Symptom monitoring before and after LIFU applications and throughout 6 months of follow-up. Each symptom is presented with a likert scale (absent, mild, moderate, severe) - along with a free response option for any symptoms not included in the list.

Measured: Throughout study participation at multiple time points, approximately 6 months.

  2. Changes in Chronic Pain - self report

Participants will complete the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) at multiple time points throughout the 6 month period. This questionnaire asks participants to rate their pain on a 10 point scale (10 being the most pain).

Measured: Multiple timepoints throughout the 6 month experimental timeframe.

  3. Changes in Anxiety - self report

Participants will complete the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) at multiple time points before and after LIFU application to track changes in anxiety throughout the 6 month timeframe. The BAI probes different symptoms of anxiety and participants rate it on a likert scale (not at all, mildly, moderately, or severely).

Measured: Throughout the experimental timeframe, approximately 6 months.

Questions about this trial

What is this clinical trial studying?

A study testing Low Intensity Focused Ultrasound in people with Chronic Pain and Generalized Anxiety Disorder, run by Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University at 1 site in United States.

The full registered description is in the About this study section and the official record.

Who may be eligible to take part?

The sponsor lists 1 inclusion and 6 exclusion criteria. Eligibility is decided by the study team after screening, so read the full criteria and contact a listed site.

How can a doctor refer a patient or contact the research team?

Contact Jessica Research Associate, MPH (540-526-2261, jnw@vtc.vt.edu), or a site near the patient. AzTrials does not enrol participants or take referrals.

What does the primary outcome measure?

Safety - monitoring of possible symptoms (time frame: Throughout study participation at multiple time points, approximately 6 months.). The study lists 3 primary outcomes in all. It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.

Where can I read the original study information?
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?

No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.
