About this study

Official title: Designing and Evaluating Communication for Dual Users of E-cigarettes and Combustible Cigarettes

The study is a pilot test of effectiveness of communication campaign ads on interest in quitting combustible cigarettes and e-cigarettes. Over the course of 5 weeks, participants are sent ads that are designed to encourage quitting and then answer surveys.

Read the detailed description

Qualtrics Services will enroll 90 US adult dual users to participate in this study using existing panels. Inclusion criteria are current cigarette and e-cigarette use, age 18 or older, and ability read and answer questions in English, and willingness to receive text messages. Qualtrics will contact, screen, consent and randomize participants into 1 of 2 study arms: exposure to a 3 cycles of 6 ads encouraging them to quit smoking and vaping simultaneously or 6 ads encouraging them to quit sequentially (quitting smoking first followed by quitting vaping). The ads (one per day) are presented along with brief daily surveys. The primary outcome in intent to quit smoking.

What is being measured

The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.

  1. Cigarette quit intention

A three question scale of interest in quitting cigarettes: How [interested are you in quitting / likely are you to quit / much do you intend to quit] smoking cigarettes in the next 6 months? 4 point response scale.

Measured: Measured at baseline (Day 0) weekly surveys (Days 7, 14), post 1 survey (Day 21), and post 2 survey (Day 35)

Secondary outcomes (5)
  1. E-cigarette quit intention

A three question scale of interest in quitting vaping (e-cigarettes): How [interested are you in quitting / likely are you to quit / much do you intend to quit] vaping in the next 6 months? 4 point response scale.

Measured: Measured at baseline (Day 0) weekly surveys (Days 7, 14), post 1 survey (Day 21), and post 2 survey (Day 35)

  2. Cigarette quit attempts

A question: In the last 7 days, have you attempted to stop smoking cigarettes? (yes/no)

Measured: Measured at baseline (Day 0) weekly surveys (Days 7, 14), post 1 survey (Day 21), and post 2 survey (Day 35)

  3. E-cigarette quit attempts

A question: In the last 7 days, have you attempted to stop vaping? (yes/no)

Measured: Measured at baseline (Day 0) weekly surveys (Days 7, 14), post 1 survey (Day 21), and post 2 survey (Day 35)

  4. Forgoing cigarettes

A question: In the last 7 days, how many times did you stop yourself from having a cigarette because you wanted to smoke less? [numerical response 0-250]

Measured: Measured at baseline (Day 0) weekly surveys (Days 7, 14), post 1 survey (Day 21), and post 2 survey (Day 35)

  5. Forgoing e-cigarettes

A question: In the last 7 days, how many times did you stop yourself from vaping because you wanted to smoke less? [numerical response 0-250]

Measured: Measured at baseline (Day 0) weekly surveys (Days 7, 14), post 1 survey (Day 21), and post 2 survey (Day 35)

A study testing communication in people with Tobacco Products and Cigarettes, run by UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at 1 site in United States.

The full registered description is in the About this study section and the official record.

Who may be eligible to take part?

The sponsor lists 4 inclusion and 1 exclusion criteria. Eligibility is decided by the study team after screening, so read the full criteria and contact a listed site.

Is this clinical trial currently recruiting?

The record says: finished, as of the sponsor's last update on 28 Oct 2026. Status can change between updates, so confirm with the study contact before making plans.

What does the primary outcome measure?

Cigarette quit intention (time frame: Measured at baseline (Day 0) weekly surveys (Days 7, 14), post 1 survey (Day 21), and post 2 survey (Day 35)). It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.

Where can I read the original study information?
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?

No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.

How often is this information updated?

AzTrials copies changed records from ClinicalTrials.gov every night and reloads the whole registry every week. The sponsor last updated this record on 28 Oct 2026.
