National Survey to Understand Ethical, Legal and Social Issues in Communicating to the Public About Epigenetics
A study testing Epigenetics Video and Nanotechnology Video in people with Healthy, run by Washington University School of Medicine at 1 site in United States.
Trial summary

About this study
Official title: Investigating ELSI Issues That May Facilitate or Impede Clinical Translation of Epigenetic Research: National Survey
Few people realize that environmental pollution and some behaviors like physical activity and tobacco smoking can affect their health by "turning on" or "turning off" certain genes through a process called "epigenetic modification." This study will develop and test strategies for communicating about epigenetics that are understandable and that increase acceptance of using epigenetics in clinical settings.

What participants receive
What participants receive. In a randomised study each person is assigned to one group by chance.
Epigenetics VideoBehavioural
Educational video about health and epigenetics.
Nanotechnology VideoBehavioural
Educational video about nanotechnology
| Study group | Role | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Epigenetics Video | Experimental | Participants will watch a brief (<5 minute) video about the concept of Epigenetics Receives: Behavioral: Epigenetics Video |

What is being measured
The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.
Knowledge & Understanding of Epigenetics Information
We will measure this outcome using a sum score of correct answers for 8 individual items. Scale ranges from 0 points to 8 points with higher scores indicating higher epigenetics knowledge.
Measured: After intervention video
Secondary outcomes (2)
Acceptability of Epigenetics Information
We will measure this outcome using 3 different constructs including perceived benefits of epigenetic research (items 1-7, ranging from 1 to 5 with higher scores indicating higher perceived benefits), perceived drawbacks of epigenetic research (items 8-10, ranging from 1 to 5 with higher scores indicating higher perceived drawbacks), and acceptance of using epigenetic research in medical support (items 11-13, ranging from 1 to 5 with higher scores indicating higher acceptance of using epigenetic research in medical support). Each item was analyzed separately.
Measured: After intervention video
Perceptions of Epigenetic Information
We will measure this outcome using an 6 item scale. Scores range from 1 to 5, with higher scores indicating greater perceptions of epigenetic information.
Measured: After intervention video

The full registered description is in the About this study section and the official record.
Who may be eligible to take part?
The sponsor lists 7 inclusion and 1 exclusion criteria. Eligibility is decided by the study team after screening, so read the full criteria and contact a listed site.
Is this clinical trial currently recruiting?
The record says: finished, as of the sponsor's last update on 14 Oct 2026. Status can change between updates, so confirm with the study contact before making plans.
Where is the study taking place?
The record lists 1 site in United States. Whether a site is taking part right now should be confirmed with that site. See every site.
What are the possible benefits and risks?
They depend on the study and the treatment, and no study can promise a benefit. The study team explains the known risks during informed consent, before anyone joins; the record itself does not list them.
Are results available for this study?
Yes. Results are posted in the registry (first posted 14 Oct 2026). A summary is in the For doctors view, and the full results are on ClinicalTrials.gov.
How can a doctor refer a patient or contact the research team?
The record lists no contact. The official record names the sponsor, who can be asked directly. AzTrials does not enrol participants or take referrals.
What does the primary outcome measure?
Knowledge & Understanding of Epigenetics Information (time frame: After intervention video). It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.
Where can I read the original study information?
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?
No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.
How often is this information updated?
AzTrials copies changed records from ClinicalTrials.gov every night and reloads the whole registry every week. The sponsor last updated this record on 14 Oct 2026.
