Determination of the Glycemic Index (GI) and Glycemic Load (GL) of Watermelon (Citrullus Lanatus) in Healthy Adults
A study testing Water melon (sugar baby), watermelon (Charleston gray) and watermelon (Crimson sweet) in people with Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load, run by Rehman Medical Institute - RMI.
Trial summary
This study aims to evaluate and compare the glycemic load (GL) and glycemic index (GI) of different types of watermelons commonly available in the market. Using glucose as the reference standard, the study will measure the blood glucose response following consumption of each watermelon type in healthy adult… Read more about this study

his study aims to evaluate and compare the glycemic load (GL) and glycemic index (GI) of different types of watermelons commonly available in the market. Using glucose as the reference standard, the study will measure the blood glucose response following consumption of each watermelon type in healthy adult participants. The objective is to identify variations in glycemic impact among watermelon varieties to inform dietary recommendations for blood sugar management.

What participants receive
What participants receive. In a randomised study each person is assigned to one group by chance.
Water melon (sugar baby)Other
Participants will consume a portion of watermelon Type A containing 50 grams of available carbohydrate to evaluate its glycemic index and glycemic load.
watermelon (Charleston gray)Other
Participants will consume a portion of watermelon Type B containing 50 grams of available carbohydrate to evaluate its glycemic index and glycemic load.
watermelon (Crimson sweet)Other
Participants will consume a portion of watermelon Type C containing 50 grams of available carbohydrate to evaluate its glycemic index and glycemic load.
| Study group | Role | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Single group (cross over) | Active comparator | Participants will consume a standard oral glucose solution containing 50 grams of available carbohydrate. This serves as the reference for calculating glycemic index. Receives: Other: Water melon (sugar baby); Other: watermelon (Charleston gray); Other: watermelon (Crimson sweet) |
What is being measured
The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.
Glycemic Index (GI) of Watermelon Varieties
Description: Incremental area under the blood glucose response curve (iAUC) over 120 minutes after consuming each watermelon type, expressed as a percentage of the iAUC after consuming the glucose reference.
Measured: 1 month
Secondary outcomes (1)
Glycemic Load (GL) of Watermelon Varieties
Calculated using the formula:
Glycemic Load = (GI × carbohydrate content per typical serving) ÷ 100
Measured: 1 month

The record says: opening soon, as of the sponsor's last update on 12 Jun 2025. Status can change between updates, so confirm with the study contact before making plans.
What are the possible benefits and risks?
They depend on the study and the treatment, and no study can promise a benefit. The study team explains the known risks during informed consent, before anyone joins; the record itself does not list them.
Are results available for this study?
This study is still under way. Results are not available in the source record yet.
How can a doctor refer a patient or contact the research team?
Contact Naseer Ahmed (03305485960, dr.naseer99@mail.com), or a site near the patient. AzTrials does not enrol participants or take referrals.
What does the primary outcome measure?
Glycemic Index (GI) of Watermelon Varieties (time frame: 1 month). It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.
Where can I read the original study information?
On the ClinicalTrials.gov record for NCT07017465, which also lists 6 linked publications.
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?
No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.
How often is this information updated?
AzTrials copies changed records from ClinicalTrials.gov every night and reloads the whole registry every week. The sponsor last updated this record on 12 Jun 2025.
