What participants receive

What participants receive. In a randomised study each person is assigned to one group by chance.

  • DexmedetomidineDrug

    Also called dex

Patients will receive 0.5 μg/kg dexmedetomidine in 10ml normal saline 10 min before the end of surgery.

What is being measured

The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.

  1. Cough suppression as regard number and severity.

Coughing severity will be classified using the 3 point scale described by Minogue et al.: 1 = mild, single cough, 2 = moderate (lasting for <5 seconds) cough, and severe (lasting for >5 seconds) cough.

Measured: at 0 and 10,20,30,40 minutes after endotracheal extubation.

Secondary outcomes (4)
  1. Intraoperative heart rate (HR).

Changes in Intraoperative heart rate. change in heart rate per minute (HR/minute) will be all measured from the patient's arrival at the operating room to the end of surgery.

    Measured: at 15-minutes interval.

  2. Intraoperative mean arterial blood pressure (MAP).

Changes in Intraoperative mean arterial blood pressure (MAP). change in mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) in mmHg will be all measured from the patient's arrival at the operating room to the end of surgery.

    Measured: at 15-minutes interval.

  3. Intraoperative arterial oxygen saturation (Spo2).

Changes in Intraoperative arterial oxygen saturation (Spo2%). change in arterial oxygen saturation (Spo2%). be all measured from the patient's arrival at the operating room to the end of surgery.

    Measured: at 15-minutes interval.

  4. Sedation score.

Sedation score will be recorded using the Ramsay sedation score (Ramsay et al., 1974).

Measured: at 0,10,20,30, and 40 minutes after tracheal extubation.

Questions about this trial

What is this clinical trial studying?

A Phase 3 study testing Dexmedetomidine, Magnesium sulfate and Lidocaine in people with Cough, run by Al-Azhar University at 1 site in Egypt.

The full registered description is in the About this study section and the official record.

Who may be eligible to take part?

The sponsor lists 6 inclusion and 10 exclusion criteria. Eligibility is decided by the study team after screening, so read the full criteria and contact a listed site.

Is this clinical trial currently recruiting?

The record says: looking for participants now, as of the sponsor's last update on 11 Jun 2025. Status can change between updates, so confirm with the study contact before making plans.

Where is the study taking place?

The record lists 1 site in Egypt. Whether a site is taking part right now should be confirmed with that site. See every site.

What are the possible benefits and risks?

They depend on the study and the treatment, and no study can promise a benefit. Some participants in this study may receive a placebo. The study team explains the known risks during informed consent, before anyone joins; the record itself does not list them.

What does this phase mean?

Phase 3 studies compare the treatment with the current standard treatment or a placebo in a large group, to confirm how well it works and watch for side effects.

Not every study follows the same path, and some studies (observational studies, device studies) have no phase.

Are results available for this study?

This study is still under way. Results are not available in the source record yet.

How can a doctor refer a patient or contact the research team?

Contact Medhat H Allam, lecturer.MD (1003012989 ext. +020, Medhathelaly@gmail.com), or a site near the patient. AzTrials does not enrol participants or take referrals.

What does the primary outcome measure?

Cough suppression as regard number and severity. (time frame: at 0 and 10,20,30,40 minutes after endotracheal extubation.). It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.

Where can I read the original study information?
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?

No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.

How often is this information updated?

AzTrials copies changed records from ClinicalTrials.gov every night and reloads the whole registry every week. The sponsor last updated this record on 11 Jun 2025.
