About this study
Official title: The Effect of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-Based and Motivational Interviewing-Supported Psychoeducation on Emotional Eating and Psychological Resilience in Individuals With Obesity
The aim of this study was to examine the effects of cognitive-behavioral and motivational interviewing-supported psychoeducation on emotional eating and psychological resilience in individuals with obesity. The study was conducted using a randomized controlled experimental design. The initial planned sample size was 102 individuals, with 51 participants allocated to each group. However, due to difficulties in participant recruitment, a subsequent power analysis was conducted, which indicated a minimum total sample size of 32 participants. Ultimately, 84 individuals who met the inclusion criteria were randomized into the experimental (n = 42) and control (n = 42) groups, and 81 participants completed the study (experimental: n = 40; control: n = 41). A cognitive-behavioral and motivational interviewing-supported psychoeducation program was applied to the experimental group. Participants were evaluated at three time points: pre-test (baseline), post-test (8 weeks), and follow-up test (2 months after the post-test). No intervention was applied to the control group. The Emotional Eating Scale and Psychological Resilience Scale were used as data collection tools in the study. The study tested the hypothesis that the cognitive-behavioral and motivational interviewing-supported psychoeducation program would be effective in reducing emotional eating levels and increasing psychological resilience in individuals with obesity. The findings of the study may contribute to understanding the potential importance of psychological approaches in the treatment of obesity.

What participants receive
What participants receive. In a randomised study each person is assigned to one group by chance.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy- Based and Motivational Interviewing-Supported PsychoeducationBehavioural
An 8-week structured psychoeducation program based on cognitive behavioral therapy principles and supported by motivational interviewing techniques.
| Study group | Role | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Psychoeducation Group | Experimental | Obese individuals in this group receive the structured cognitive behavioral therapy-based and motivational interviewing-supported psychoeducation program. Receives: Behavioral: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy- Based and Motivational Interviewing-Supported Psychoeducation |
| Control Group | No intervention | Obese individuals in this group did not receive any interventional procedure during the study period. Only assessment measurements were conducted for research purposes. After completion of follow-up assessments, the psychoeducation program was offered to those who requested it. |
What is being measured
The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.
Emotional Eating Scale
Emotional eating was assessed using the Emotional Eating Scale (EES). Scores range from 0 to 30; higher scores indicate a worse outcome (greater emotional eating).
Measured: Baseline; end of week 8 (post-intervention); 2-month follow-up
Resilience scale
Resilience was assessed using a resilience scale. Scores range from 0 to 84; higher scores indicate greater resilience (better outcome).
Measured: Baseline; post-intervention (end of week 8); 2-month follow-up
