About this study

This randomized controlled trial examined whether an advance care planning (ACP) tabletop game ("Walking with Wishes") could improve the consistency of life-sustaining treatment preferences between older adults with lung cancer and their potential surrogates (family members or friends), compared to a standard ACP manual. Eligible dyads (patient-surrogate pairs) were randomized 1:1 to either the tabletop game intervention or the ACP manual control group. The primary outcome was the absolute gap score on the modified Life Support Preferences Questionnaire (m-LSPQ), measuring the difference between patient and surrogate preferences for five life-sustaining treatments (antibiotics, CPR, surgery, nasogastric tube feeding, and intravenous infusion) across nine health scenarios. Secondary outcomes included state anxiety (STAI-S) for both patients and surrogates. The m-LSPQ was assessed at baseline (T0), 2 weeks (T2), and 6 weeks (T3) post-intervention. The STAI-S was additionally assessed immediately post-intervention (T1) to capture acute emotional responses to the intervention.

What is being measured

The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.

  1. Absolute Gap Score on m-LSPQ Total Score Baseline

The modified Life Support Preferences Questionnaire (m-LSPQ) contains 45 items rated from 1 (absolutely unwanted) to 5 (absolutely wanted). The total score is calculated by summing all 45 item scores and ranges from 45 to 225; higher scores indicate greater preference for receiving life-sustaining treatments.

Patient and surrogate total scores are reported separately. The absolute gap score is calculated within each patient-surrogate dyad as |surrogate total score - patient total score|. The absolute gap score ranges from 0 to 180; smaller values indicate greater patient-surrogate concordance, with 0 indicating complete agreement.

    Measured: Baseline (T0)

  2. Absolute Gap Score on m-LSPQ Total Score at 2 Weeks

The modified Life Support Preferences Questionnaire (m-LSPQ) contains 45 items rated from 1 (absolutely unwanted) to 5 (absolutely wanted). The total score is calculated by summing all 45 item scores and ranges from 45 to 225; higher scores indicate a greater preference for receiving life-sustaining treatments. Patient and surrogate total scores are reported separately. For each patient-surrogate dyad, the absolute gap score is calculated as |surrogate total score - patient total score|. The absolute gap score ranges from 0 to 180; smaller values indicate greater patient-surrogate concordance, with 0 indicating complete agreement.

    Measured: 2 weeks post-intervention (T2)

  3. Absolute Gap Score on m-LSPQ Total Score at 6 Weeks

    Measured: 6 weeks post-intervention (T3)

Questions about this trial

What is this clinical trial studying?

A study testing ACP GAME and acp manual in people with Advanced Care Planning (ACP) and ELDERLY PEOPLE, run by National Taiwan University Hospital at 1 site in Taiwan.

The full registered description is in the About this study section and the official record.

Who may be eligible to take part?

The sponsor lists 3 inclusion and 2 exclusion criteria. Eligibility is decided by the study team after screening, so read the full criteria and contact a listed site.

Is this clinical trial currently recruiting?

The record says: finished, as of the sponsor's last update on 30 Oct 2026. Status can change between updates, so confirm with the study contact before making plans.

Where is the study taking place?

The record lists 1 site in Taiwan. Whether a site is taking part right now should be confirmed with that site. See every site.

What are the possible benefits and risks?

They depend on the study and the treatment, and no study can promise a benefit. Some participants in this study may receive a placebo. The study team explains the known risks during informed consent, before anyone joins; the record itself does not list them.

Are results available for this study?

Yes. Results are posted in the registry (first posted 30 Oct 2026). A summary is in the For doctors view, and the full results are on ClinicalTrials.gov.

How can a doctor refer a patient or contact the research team?

The record lists no contact. The official record names the sponsor, who can be asked directly. AzTrials does not enrol participants or take referrals.

What does the primary outcome measure?

Absolute Gap Score on m-LSPQ Total Score Baseline (time frame: Baseline (T0)). The study lists 3 primary outcomes in all. It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.

Where can I read the original study information?
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?

No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.

How often is this information updated?

AzTrials copies changed records from ClinicalTrials.gov every night and reloads the whole registry every week. The sponsor last updated this record on 30 Oct 2026.
