Study population: The subjects of our study were recruited according to two methods at the Military Medical Center of Sector N°5 in Ngaoundere. Participation in the study was proposed to any soldier who attended the Military Medical Center of Sector N°5 for the annual re-engagement medical visit during the period from January 1, 2017 to November 13, 2018. The civilian populations were recruited from two free cardiovascular risk factors screening campaigns carried out from January 04, 2017 to January 10, 2017 and from November 12, 2018 to November 18, 2018. These campaigns were open to soldiers wishing to participate.

About this study
Purpose: The objective of our study was to assess the cardiovascular risk of a Cameroonian military population and compare it to the cardiovascular risk of the neighboring civilian population.
Patients and methods: We will conduct a cross-sectional study that involved subjects aged from 18 to 58 years, recruited from October 2017 to November 2018 at the Fifth Military Sector Health Center in Ngaoundéré. Data collection and assessment was done according to World Health Organization STEPS manual for surveillance of risk factors of Non-communicable chronic diseases; and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test. Five cardiovascular risk factors were assessed, smoking, harmful alcohol consumption, obesity/overweight, hypertension and diabetes. Cardiovascular risk was considered high in subjects with three or more cardiovascular risk factors. Univariates analysis and multivariate logistic regression were carried out according to their indications.

What is being measured
The primary outcome is the main question the study is designed to answer.
Cardiovascular risk factor
evaluated by summing the participant's cardiovascular risk factors. The cardiovascular risk factors used for the cardiovascular risk assessment were smoking, excessive alcohol consumption (defined by an AUDIT score ≥ 8), overweight or obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. The cardiovascular risk was considered high if the subject had a combination of at least 3 cardiovascular risk factors.
Measured: At inclusion
Secondary outcomes (6)
Smoking
answering "yes" to the question do you smoke?
Measured: At inclusion
Alcoholism
answering "yes" to the question do you consume alcohol?
Measured: At inclusion
Body mass index
3 modalities was defined according to BMI. Underweight (BMI < 18.5 Kg/m2), normal weight (18 ≤ BMI < 25 Kg/m²), overweight (25 ≤ BMI < 30 Kg/m²), obesity (BMI ≥ 30 Kg/m²).
Measured: At inclusion
Systolic Blood Pressure (mmHg)
Systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mmHg or taking a hypotensive treatment.
Measured: At inclusion
Glycaemia (mmol/L)
Fasting blood glucose ≥ 7 mmol/l or taking a hypoglycemic treatment
Measured: At inclusion
Diastolic Blood Pressure (mmHg)
diastolic ≥ 90 mmHg or taking a hypotensive treatment.
Measured: At inclusion

Questions about this trial
What is this clinical trial studying?
An observational study of Cardiovascular Risk Factor, run by Support and Education Technic Centre.
The full registered description is in the About this study section and the official record.
Who may be eligible to take part?
The sponsor lists 3 inclusion and 1 exclusion criteria. Eligibility is decided by the study team after screening, so read the full criteria and contact a listed site.
Is this clinical trial currently recruiting?
The record says: finished, as of the sponsor's last update on 19 Mar 2020. Status can change between updates, so confirm with the study contact before making plans.
What are the possible benefits and risks?
They depend on the study and the treatment, and no study can promise a benefit. The study team explains the known risks during informed consent, before anyone joins; the record itself does not list them.
Are results available for this study?
The study is completed, but results are not available in the source record. That does not mean the treatment did or did not work.
How can a doctor refer a patient or contact the research team?
The record lists no contact. The official record names the sponsor, who can be asked directly. AzTrials does not enrol participants or take referrals.
What does the primary outcome measure?
Cardiovascular risk factor (time frame: At inclusion). It is what the study was designed to measure, not a finding.
Where can I read the original study information?
On the ClinicalTrials.gov record for NCT04315441, which also lists 1 linked publication.
Does a listing mean the treatment is approved or proven to work?
No. A listing means the study is registered. It does not show that the treatment is safe, works, or is approved by a regulator.
How often is this information updated?
AzTrials copies changed records from ClinicalTrials.gov every night and reloads the whole registry every week. The sponsor last updated this record on 19 Mar 2020; AzTrials last refreshed its copy on 8 Nov 2026.
